New Delhi: Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) marked its Silver Jubilee on October 1, 2026, completing 25 years since its establishment in 2001. The occasion was observed as ‘Tri-Service Day’, highlighting the organisation’s role in strengthening jointness, integration and coordination among India’s three armed services.
The Silver Jubilee celebrations were held under the theme “Future Readiness through Jointness & Integration”. As part of the programme, HQ IDS organised ‘Trishakti Manthan’, bringing together senior defence leadership to discuss operational preparedness and the evolving requirements of modern warfare.
The event featured addresses by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, General N. S. Raja Subramani, and Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC), Air Marshal Tejinder Singh.
Focus on Joint Operational Preparedness
The deliberations at Trishakti Manthan highlighted the contribution of HQ IDS to India’s operational preparedness through greater coordination among the three Services.
Over the past 25 years, the organisation has worked on areas including:
- Joint operational doctrines
- Joint training frameworks
- Integrated military exercises
- Enhanced coordination of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) mechanisms
These efforts are aimed at improving coordination and enabling the Defence Forces to operate more effectively across different operational environments.
The growing emphasis on jointness reflects the changing nature of national security challenges, where land, maritime, air, space, cyber and cognitive capabilities increasingly intersect.

Silver Jubilee Book and Film Released
As part of the 25-year celebrations, HQ IDS released a Silver Jubilee Book documenting its evolution and achievements since its establishment.
A film showcasing key milestones from the organisation’s journey over the past two-and-a-half decades was also released during the celebrations.
The commemorative initiatives provide an overview of HQ IDS’s development and its contribution to strengthening coordination and integration across the Defence Forces.

CDS Unit Citations for Personnel
The celebrations also recognised personnel who have contributed to strengthening jointness and integration.
The prestigious CDS Unit Citations were conferred on personnel in recognition of their contributions. The recognition highlights the role of officers and personnel in building institutional mechanisms that support joint operations and integrated military planning.
A Wreath Laying Ceremony was also conducted at the National War Memorial & Museum to honour the armed forces personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.
Preparing for Cyber, Space and AI Domains
Beyond traditional military domains, HQ IDS has increasingly focused on emerging areas that are shaping modern defence preparedness.
The organisation has played a role in preparing the Defence Forces for domains including Cyber, Space and Artificial Intelligence. These areas are becoming increasingly important as technological advances influence surveillance, communication, information systems and operational capabilities.
HQ IDS has also promoted collaboration with research organisations, academia and industry to support indigenous capability development.
This work aligns with the broader objective of Atmanirbharta in Defence, which seeks to strengthen domestic defence capabilities and reduce dependence on external sources.
Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms for Jointness
HQ IDS has established and supported several platforms for structured discussions on contemporary security and operational challenges.
Among these are Ran Samwad, the Joint Commanders’ Conference (JCC), and the Combined Operational Review and Evaluation (CORE) Programme.
These platforms facilitate professional discussions, operational reviews and the exchange of ideas across the three Services. They also contribute to efforts aimed at enhancing joint warfighting capabilities.
The focus extends across multiple domains, including land, maritime, air, space, cyber and cognitive operations.
Two-and-a-Half Decades of Integration
Since its establishment on October 1, 2001, HQ IDS has evolved as an apex institution focused on strengthening jointness, integration and synergy among the three Services.
Its role has expanded alongside changes in the security environment and the growing need for coordinated capability development and joint employment of combat power.
The organisation’s work covers operational planning, joint training, capability enhancement and coordination across different defence domains, supporting national security objectives.
Looking Ahead to Future-Ready Defence
The 25th anniversary of HQ IDS comes at a time when defence preparedness increasingly depends on the ability of military Services to work together across traditional and emerging domains.
The Silver Jubilee theme, “Future Readiness through Jointness & Integration,” reflects this continuing focus. From integrated exercises and joint doctrines to cyber, space and artificial intelligence, HQ IDS is working to strengthen mechanisms that support coordinated responses to evolving security challenges.
As HQ IDS enters its next phase, its emphasis on jointness, technological preparedness, indigenous capability development and institutional coordination will remain central to India’s efforts to build an integrated and future-ready Defence Forces.
