The Union Ministry of Law and Justice has officially notified his appointment after the elevation of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya to the Supreme Court of India. Justice Sambre will perform the duties of the Chief Justice until a permanent appointment is made.

Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on October 5, 2026. The appointment was made under Article 223 of the Constitution of India, which allows the President of India to appoint an Acting Chief Justice when the office of the Chief Justice becomes vacant or when the Chief Justice is unable to perform official duties.
