New Delhi: Agasthyamalai Ecological Landscape has come under the spotlight after the Supreme Court of India ordered the removal of encroachments from protected forest areas spread across Tamil Nadu and Keralam.

The court directed authorities to prepare and implement a time-bound eviction plan and take action against individuals and officials responsible for illegal occupation of forest land.

The order is being seen as a major step toward protecting one of India’s most important biodiversity-rich regions.

Key directions issued by the court:

  • Prepare a time-bound action plan for eviction of encroachers.
  • Remove illegal structures built within protected forest areas.
  • Initiate disciplinary and legal action against government officials involved in encroachments.
  • Ensure ecological restoration after the removal process.
  • Monitor implementation on priority to prevent further environmental damage.

According to reports, the bench observed that encroachments have continued for several decades despite earlier directions from authorities and courts.

Why Is Agasthyamalai Important?

Agasthyamalai is one of the most ecologically significant landscapes in India.

Key facts:

  • Located in the southern Western Ghats.
  • Spread across parts of Tamil Nadu and Keralam.
  • Home to rich biodiversity and several endangered species.
  • Includes tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and protected forests.
  • Recognized internationally for its ecological importance.

The region plays a critical role in:

  • Water security
  • Climate regulation
  • Wildlife conservation
  • Protection of forest ecosystems
  • Livelihood support for local communities

What Triggered the Court’s Intervention?

The issue emerged after concerns were raised regarding illegal occupation of forest land, unauthorized constructions and continued human activities inside protected areas.

Investigations and reports submitted before the court highlighted large-scale encroachments and inadequate enforcement of conservation laws. The court noted that environmental protection cannot be delayed because of administrative inaction.
