New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended Justice Shree Chandrashekhar for appointment as the next Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The decision was formalized in a resolution uploaded on the Court’s website following the Collegium meeting held on 25 August.
Justice Chandrashekhar, currently serving as a judge of the Bombay High Court, hails from the Jharkhand High Court. His elevation marks a significant step in a judicial career spanning nearly three decades.
Distinguished Career in Law
Justice Chandrashekhar enrolled as an advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council on 9 December 1993. He practiced in Delhi, gaining experience in criminal and civil matters. Over two decades, he appeared in nearly 3,500 Supreme Court cases, with about 140 reported judgments.
As counsel, he represented government bodies including AICTE, the States of Jharkhand and Bihar, the Bihar State Housing Board, the Bihar State Pollution Control Board, the Jharkhand State Electricity Board, and ICAR. He also served as Standing Counsel for several corporations and private firms.
Transition to Judiciary
On 17 January 2013, Justice Chandrashekhar was appointed Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court. He became a Permanent Judge on 27 June 2014. His reputation grew for fairness and legal acumen.
On 29 December 2023, he was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, where he oversaw important cases and administrative functions. In July 2025, he was transferred from the Rajasthan High Court to the Bombay High Court. Shortly after, the Collegium recommended his appointment as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
