Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh has significantly expanded its electricity generation capacity and is now focusing on renewable energy, energy storage and affordable power procurement. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav said the state’s generation capacity has reached around 32,000 MW, with nearly 30% coming from green energy.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the “Affordable Procurement of Renewable Energy and Energy Storage” workshop organised by the All India DISCOMs Association in Bhopal on September 22.
The Chief Minister also released a book published by the association during the programme. The workshop focused on ways to make renewable power procurement more affordable and strengthen the capacity of electricity distribution companies.
MP’s Power Capacity Rises to 32,000 MW
CM Mohan Yadav said Madhya Pradesh had a long history of power shortages, but the state has now moved towards a surplus position by steadily increasing its generation capacity.
According to the Chief Minister, from the formation of Madhya Pradesh until 2002-03, the state’s power generation capacity stood at around 5,000 MW. This has now increased to nearly 32,000 MW.
Renewable energy accounts for around 30% of the state’s electricity capacity, reflecting the growing role of solar and other clean-energy sources in Madhya Pradesh. The state has also been highlighting renewable energy as an important part of its future power strategy.
Yadav said the government is working to increase electricity generation while also improving the systems required to manage rising demand across agriculture, households and industries.

Renewable Energy Projects Gain Momentum
The Chief Minister said Madhya Pradesh is continuing to expand renewable energy production and is working towards setting new benchmarks in the sector.
He referred to a major project in the Neemuch-Mandsaur region, where a 2,000 MW-capacity plant is being developed. According to the Chief Minister, projects of this scale generally take several years to complete, while the state expects this project to be completed in around two to two-and-a-half years.
The expansion of renewable generation is also being supported by energy-storage projects. Madhya Pradesh is increasingly looking at solar, wind and pumped-storage systems alongside conventional sources to meet future electricity requirements.
The state’s approach is not limited to producing more electricity. Storage has become an important part of the strategy because it can help manage the intermittent nature of renewable sources and make power available when demand rises.
Morena Project to Supply Stored Solar Power
The Chief Minister highlighted the solar electricity storage project being established in Morena in the Gwalior-Chambal region.
He said the project would provide electricity at a cost of around Rs 2.70 per unit, making it an important part of the state’s efforts to secure affordable power.
Madhya Pradesh is already pursuing solar projects combined with battery energy storage systems in Morena. A current MPERC proceeding relates to a solar PV project with a battery energy storage system designed to provide 440 MWh of peak power supply from the Morena Solar Park.
Such projects are important for integrating larger quantities of renewable energy into the electricity system while maintaining supply during periods of high demand.
Smart Meters and Stronger Distribution Network
Along with increasing generation, Madhya Pradesh is also upgrading its electricity distribution infrastructure.
CM Yadav said around 42 lakh smart meters have already been installed across the state. Smart metering can help distribution companies improve consumption monitoring, billing and electricity management.
At the national level, the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme is also supporting smart metering and IT-enabled distribution infrastructure. Under the scheme, Madhya Pradesh has sanctioned smart-metering works worth Rs 8,911 crore, along with IT/OT works worth Rs 425 crore, according to the Ministry of Power.
The Chief Minister called on electricity companies to improve their efficiency, reduce losses and strengthen their operational capacity.
Focus on Affordable and Reliable Electricity
Yadav said the state government remains committed to providing electricity to consumers at affordable rates. He noted that electricity has become essential for almost every sector, making reliable supply increasingly important as consumption rises.
He said the government is using new technologies and establishing new generation units to meet growing requirements. The focus is now shifting towards a combination of conventional generation, solar, wind and storage-based power.
The Chief Minister also referred to the country’s increasing focus on green and clean energy and said India has made significant progress in expanding renewable-energy production.
He said Madhya Pradesh is moving towards round-the-clock renewable energy generation and that the state government is ready to address challenges related to increasing power production.
DISCOMs to Benefit From Workshop
The workshop organised by the All India DISCOMs Association brought together stakeholders to discuss affordable procurement of renewable energy and energy-storage solutions.
Yadav said the discussions would be useful for electricity companies and help them explore ways to improve their efficiency and capacity.
Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar, who addressed the programme virtually, said the workshop would help identify practical measures to make electricity distribution companies more capable and effective.
For Madhya Pradesh, the expansion of renewable energy is increasingly linked with both energy security and future economic development. Higher generation capacity, storage systems, smart metering and stronger distribution networks can help the state manage rising electricity demand while gradually increasing the role of cleaner sources in its power mix.
