New Delhi: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has delivered the fourth stealth frigate, ‘Mahendragiri’, under the Project 17A (P17A) class to the Indian Navy.
The warship was officially handed over on April 30, 2026, and will soon be commissioned as INS Mahendragiri, marking a major milestone in India’s naval modernization efforts.
Acceptance Document Signed in Presence of Senior Naval Officials
The Acceptance Document (D448) was signed by Captain Jagmohan (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director of MDL, and Rear Admiral Gautam Marwaha, Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Eastern Naval Command.
The ceremony took place in the presence of senior officials from MDL and the Indian Navy, highlighting the strong collaboration between the shipbuilder and naval authorities.

Advanced Indigenous Warship Under Project 17A
‘Mahendragiri’ is an indigenously designed and built stealth frigate equipped with advanced combat systems and cutting-edge technology. It represents India’s growing capability in modern warship construction.
The vessel is part of the Project 17A programme, aimed at enhancing the Indian Navy’s operational strength with next-generation stealth frigates.
Major Milestone for ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’
The delivery of Mahendragiri is particularly significant as it is the final P17A class ship being constructed at MDL. It showcases India’s progress in defence manufacturing under key national initiatives like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Officials highlighted that the project reflects the combined efforts of the Warship Design Bureau, Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), MDL, and various branches of the Indian Navy.

Warship to Enhance Maritime Security and Operational Strength
The addition of INS Mahendragiri is expected to significantly strengthen India’s maritime security and operational capabilities. With advanced stealth features and modern weapon systems, the frigate will play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s interests in the Indian Ocean region.
