MGL and BMC Sign Agreement for 350 TPD Compressed Biogas Plant in Mankhurd to Boost Green Energy in Mumbai

The new waste-to-energy project will convert organic municipal waste into compressed biogas, reduce landfill burden, and support Mumbai’s sustainability and clean energy goals.
Indian Masterminds Stories

Mumbai: Mumbai is set to take a major step forward in sustainable waste management and clean energy production as Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have signed a concession agreement for Phase-I of a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Mankhurd.

The agreement, signed on June 1, 2026, marks the formal beginning of project implementation for a 350 tonnes per day (TPD) waste-to-energy facility designed to convert organic municipal waste into renewable compressed biogas.

350 TPD CBG Plant to Process Organic Waste

The upcoming CBG facility at Mankhurd will have a processing capacity of 350 TPD and will focus exclusively on segregated organic waste collected from:

  • Designated hotels
  • Vegetable markets
  • Kitchen waste sources

By focusing on source-segregated organic waste, the project aims to improve efficiency in biogas production while reducing contamination issues commonly seen in mixed municipal waste.

Turning Waste into Renewable Energy

The core objective of the project is to convert biodegradable waste into Compressed Biogas, a renewable fuel that can be used as a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil fuels.

Key expected benefits include:

  • Reduction in landfill waste burden
  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions
  • Generation of renewable energy from urban waste
  • Promotion of circular economy practices

This initiative is aligned with Mumbai’s broader environmental sustainability and climate action goals, particularly in improving waste processing infrastructure and reducing methane emissions from landfills.

Strengthening Mumbai’s Waste-to-Energy Ecosystem

The Mankhurd CBG project is expected to become one of Mumbai’s key green energy infrastructure developments. With the signing of the concession agreement, both MGL and BMC will now begin execution and implementation activities for the facility.

The project also supports India’s wider push toward renewable energy adoption and decentralized waste-to-energy systems in urban areas.

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL)

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) is one of India’s largest natural gas distribution companies, serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. As a public sector undertaking, MGL is dedicated to providing eco-friendly, safe, and reliable natural gas to residential, commercial, industrial, and transport sectors. The company is playing a crucial role in promoting cleaner fuels like CNG and PNG and is actively expanding into LNG and other clean energy initiatives to support sustainable urban development.
