Centre Approves ₹496.66 Crore Scheme to Expand Mobile Forensic Vans Across India

The Centre has approved a ₹496.66 crore scheme to modernise forensic infrastructure by providing Mobile Forensic Vans to districts and State Forensic Science Laboratories, with 619 vans already allocated across the country.

New Delhi: The Centre has approved a ₹496.66 crore Scheme for Modernization of Forensic Capacities to strengthen scientific investigation across the country by providing Mobile Forensic Vans (MFVs) to all districts and State Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs). The information was provided by Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The initiative aims to improve crime scene investigation by equipping forensic teams with advanced tools for evidence collection, documentation and preliminary examination at the scene of crime.

Mobile Forensic Vans Equipped with Modern Investigation Tools

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Mobile Forensic Vans are fitted with modern forensic equipment to support scientific examination of crime scenes.

The vans are equipped to provide:

  • Crime scene documentation.
  • Photography and videography.
  • Collection of biological and trace evidence.
  • Fingerprint development and lifting.
  • Preliminary examination of physical evidence.
  • Secure preservation of exhibits.
  • Digital documentation.
  • Other essential forensic investigation tools.

619 Mobile Forensic Vans Already Allocated

The government said 619 Mobile Forensic Vans have already been allocated to various States across the country under the scheme.

While the Centre is funding the procurement of the vans, State Governments and Union Territories will bear the operational costs, including the recruitment of manpower required for running the facilities.
