New Delhi: Ending months of administrative speculation and industry-level conjecture, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Tuesday officially approved the appointment of Vishwanath Suresh as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of MOIL Limited, India’s largest producer of manganese ore.

The approval brings clarity and stability to the top leadership of the Nagpur-headquartered Schedule ‘A’ Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), which functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel.

MOIL New CMD Appointment: Tenure Till Superannuation or Further Orders

According to the ACC’s decision, Vishwanath Suresh will hold the position of CMD of MOIL Limited until his superannuation on August 31, 2030, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

His appointment is expected to provide long-term continuity to MOIL’s leadership at a time when the company is pursuing expansion, modernization, and enhanced production targets to support the growing requirements of India’s steel sector.

From NMDC to MOIL: A Strategic Leadership Transition

Vishwanath Suresh is currently serving as Director (Commercial) at NMDC Limited, one of India’s largest iron ore mining companies. He is also a former senior executive of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), giving him extensive experience across key segments of India’s mining and steel ecosystem.

His transition from NMDC to MOIL is widely seen as a strategic move, given his deep understanding of commercial operations, market dynamics, pricing mechanisms, and large-scale mining enterprises.

MOIL New CMD Appointment: PESB Shortlisting in October 2025

The process leading to Suresh’s appointment began on October 4, 2025, when the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) shortlisted him for the CMD position after evaluating a pool of high-profile candidates.

The PESB, which serves as the government’s principal head-hunting body for senior management positions in CPSEs, had recommended Suresh based on his professional credentials and sectoral expertise. However, the final approval by the ACC had been awaited, giving rise to speculation in administrative and industry circles.

ACC Nod Brings Stability to MOIL Leadership

The ACC’s endorsement has effectively silenced rumours and uncertainty surrounding the leadership transition at MOIL. In recent weeks, there has been widespread discussion in policy and industry circles about potential delays or alternative outcomes.

With the Cabinet’s clearance now in place, MOIL is set to move forward with a clear leadership mandate, ensuring stability at the helm of one of India’s most critical mineral-producing PSUs.

Challenges and Expectations Ahead

As CMD of MOIL Limited, Vishwanath Suresh will be responsible for:

  • Driving production expansion of manganese ore
  • Enhancing domestic supply to meet the rising needs of the Indian steel industry
  • Improving operational efficiency and commercial performance
  • Supporting the government’s broader goals related to mineral security and self-reliance

MOIL plays a crucial role in ensuring steady availability of manganese, a vital input for steel manufacturing, making its leadership pivotal for downstream industries.

Strengthening India’s Mining and Steel Ecosystem

The appointment aligns with the government’s broader effort to place experienced and sector-savvy professionals at the helm of strategic PSUs. 

With India’s infrastructure and manufacturing push accelerating, the role of companies like MOIL has become increasingly important in sustaining supply chains and supporting industrial growth.
