MoSPI, ISI Kolkata’s IDEAS Sign MoUs for GDP Nowcasting, Data Harmonisation Studies

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has signed two MoUs with IDEAS, ISI Kolkata, to undertake research on GDP nowcasting and develop a harmonised framework linking government scheme data with household-level NSS data.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Institute of Data Engineering, Analytics and Science Foundation (IDEAS), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, to undertake research studies aimed at strengthening the use and harmonisation of statistical data.

The MoUs were signed by Agnimitra Biswas, Chief Executive Officer, IDEAS, and Prasoon Verma, Director, Training Unit, Capacity Development Division, MoSPI.

The signing ceremony was attended by P. R. Meshram, Director General (Data Governance), MoSPI, and R. Rajesh, Additional Director General, Capacity Development Division, MoSPI.

Two Research Areas Under the Collaboration

The collaboration will focus on two key areas:

  • GDP Nowcasting: IDEAS will develop a desktop-based software tool for GDP nowcasting, aimed at providing estimates of economic activity using available data.
  • Harmonised Indicator Framework: A framework will be developed to link administrative data relating to government health, nutrition and well-being schemes with household-level National Sample Survey (NSS) data.

MoSPI to Provide Data and Financial Support

Under the collaboration, MoSPI will provide financial assistance and data support, while IDEAS will undertake the development and research components outlined under the MoUs.

The initiative is intended to serve as a knowledge-sharing platform between MoSPI and IDEAS, with the collaboration focusing on deeper analysis of statistics released by the ministry and their harmonisation with other data sources.

Supporting Data-Driven Decision-Making

The collaboration is aimed at strengthening the use of multiple data sources for statistical analysis and supporting data-driven decision-making as part of the government’s broader vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
