NALCO Partners with EGA for DX+ Ultra Technology in 0.5 MTPA Angul Aluminium Smelter Expansion

Technology agreement signed in Dubai will support NALCO’s brownfield expansion in Odisha and take its overall aluminium production capacity towards 1 MTPA.

New Delhi: National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, has signed a Technology Licensing Agreement with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) for the deployment of EGA’s DX+ Ultra aluminium smelting technology.

The agreement was signed in Dubai on September 7, 2026, and covers NALCO’s 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) brownfield smelter expansion project at Angul (Anugola), Odisha.

The partnership is aimed at strengthening NALCO’s aluminium production capabilities through the adoption of advanced and energy-efficient smelting technology.

DX+ Ultra Technology to Support Angul Expansion

Under the agreement, EGA will provide NALCO with the technology and technical expertise required for implementing the DX+ Ultra technology.

The agreement includes:

  • Technology licence for DX+ Ultra smelting technology
  • Technical know-how required for project implementation
  • Engineering designs and technical information
  • Technical support during different stages of the project
  • Support for deployment of the technology at NALCO’s Angul expansion

DX+ Ultra is a high-amperage aluminium smelting technology developed by EGA in the UAE. It is designed to support higher productivity and improved energy performance, helping aluminium producers improve operational efficiency.

0.5 MTPA Brownfield Expansion at Angul

The technology will be deployed for NALCO’s planned 0.5 MTPA brownfield expansion at its Angul facility in Odisha.

The expansion is expected to add approximately 500,000 tonnes per annum of aluminium production capacity.

With the additional capacity, NALCO’s overall aluminium production capacity is expected to move towards around 1 million tonnes per annum.

The project is an important part of NALCO’s broader expansion strategy and is expected to strengthen its position in the domestic aluminium industry.

NALCO-EGA Agreement Signed in Presence of Senior Leadership

The signing ceremony in Dubai was attended by senior officials from both companies.

The event was held in the presence of:

  • Brijendra Pratap Singh, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NALCO
  • Mr. Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer, EGA
  • Jagdish Arora, Director (Projects & Technical), NALCO
  • Abhay Kumar Behuria, Director (Finance), NALCO

The agreement was signed by Biju K, Chief General Manager (Projects), NALCO, while EGA was represented by Mr. Abdalla Zarouni, Acting Executive Vice President – Midstream.

Other senior NALCO officials also attended the signing ceremony.


NALCO Aims to Improve Smelter Efficiency

The adoption of DX+ Ultra technology is expected to help NALCO develop a more efficient and competitive aluminium smelter at Angul.

The technology partnership is aimed at supporting:

  • Higher aluminium production
  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Enhanced operational productivity
  • Optimised capital and operating costs
  • Greater technological efficiency in aluminium production

The project is also expected to contribute to NALCO’s long-term growth and expansion plans.

CMD Brijendra Pratap Singh Highlights Strategic Importance

Brijendra Pratap Singh, CMD, NALCO, said that the adoption of EGA’s advanced technology will help the Angul expansion emerge as one of the most efficient aluminium smelters in India.

He highlighted that the project will support NALCO’s growth plans while strengthening the country’s aluminium ecosystem.

According to the company, the initiative is also expected to contribute to economic growth and environmental efficiency and support India’s broader vision of Viksit Bharat.

Partnership to Strengthen India’s Aluminium Ecosystem

The agreement between NALCO and EGA marks a significant step in NALCO’s ongoing expansion programme under the guidance of the Ministry of Mines, Government of India.

The deployment of DX+ Ultra technology at the Angul smelter is expected to enhance NALCO’s production capabilities while supporting efficiency and sustainability in aluminium manufacturing.

The additional capacity will also help NALCO cater to the growing demand for aluminium from India’s strategic and emerging sectors.
