Delhi Plans 3.3-km Netaji Subhash Marg Redevelopment with Heritage Park and Improved Public Spaces

New Delhi: The Delhi government has prepared a redevelopment plan for the 3.3-km Netaji Subhash Marg corridor, connecting Delhi Gate with Kashmere Gate, with a focus on improving traffic management, pedestrian infrastructure and public spaces while preserving the historic character of Old Delhi.

The project, being undertaken by the Indraprastha Virasat Punarvikas Nigam (IVPN), aims to transform the busy stretch into a more organised and accessible urban corridor linking important historical monuments, parks and cultural landmarks.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the objective was to develop the road beyond its role as a transport route and create a link between Delhi’s heritage, architecture, culture and modern urban life.

Netaji Subhash Marg Redevelopment Plan Divided into Three Sections

The proposed redevelopment covers the stretch from Delhi Gate to Kashmere Gate. Based on the existing road width, the government has divided the corridor into three sections:

  • Kashmere Gate to GPO Chowk: This is the busiest section, with road widths ranging from 12 to 24 metres.
  • GPO Chowk to Brij Mohan Chowk: This stretch, which includes the intersection leading towards Jama Masjid, has an average width of 45 metres.
  • Brij Mohan Chowk to Delhi Gate: The final section has road widths ranging from 16.8 to 26 metres.

The design takes into account the varying road widths and existing traffic conditions along the corridor.

Footpaths, Cycle Tracks and Bus Lanes Proposed

The redevelopment plan includes provisions for both motorised and non-motorised transport, with separate facilities intended to improve movement along the busy route.

Key proposed infrastructure includes:

  • Wider footpaths for pedestrians.
  • Dedicated bus lanes and motor vehicle lanes.
  • Cycle tracks for non-motorised transport.
  • Designated parking spaces.
  • Pedestrian plazas and improved crossing facilities.
  • Modern public toilets on both sides of the road.
  • Upgradation of existing bus stops.
  • Better-organised traffic signals and road junctions.

The proposed facilities will follow the Public Works Department’s design guidelines for its streetscape development projects.

12 Heritage Sites and Green Spaces to Be Integrated

A major component of the project is the integrated development of 12 prominent heritage locations and green spaces along the corridor.

These include:

  • Agrasen Park
  • Lothian Cemetery
  • Old Railway Station Chowk
  • Red Fort Green Pocket
  • Dussehra Mela Ground at the Red Fort
  • Chandni Chowk-Red Fort Chowk
  • Sunehri Masjid Bagh
  • Subhash Park
  • Brij Mohan Chowk
  • Delhi Gate Chowk
  • Ekta Sthal
  • Hindi Park

The broader corridor also connects prominent landmarks such as the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, St James’ Church and the Kashmere Gate area.

The plan seeks to improve the use of existing green spaces and public areas while strengthening their connection with the surrounding historical locations.

Heritage Interpretation Park Proposed Near Delhi Gate

The area surrounding Delhi Gate will receive special attention under the redevelopment proposal.

The government plans to develop a Heritage Interpretation Park in the area. Its proposed features include:

  • A statue and an architectural pavilion.
  • Landscaped green spaces.
  • Ornamental plants and trees.
  • Dedicated pedestrian access.
  • Parking facilities.
  • Architectural elements reflecting the area’s historical character.

The plan also includes decorative walls, organised seating spaces, streetlights, flower beds and green dividers along the corridor.

Delhi Government Focuses on Heritage-Led Urban Development

The redevelopment of Netaji Subhash Marg is part of the Delhi government’s broader approach to improving public infrastructure while retaining the historical identity of Old Delhi.

The corridor passes through an area associated with several important monuments, religious sites, parks and cultural spaces. Its proposed integration with these locations is intended to create a more connected public environment.

The project combines road infrastructure improvements with pedestrian amenities, green spaces and heritage-focused urban design. However, the government has not specified a project completion timeline or overall redevelopment cost in the announcement.
