New Delhi: NITI Aayog has announced the formation of a high-level Critical & Strategic Minerals Committee to accelerate India’s efforts in identifying, assessing, and developing critical mineral resources. These minerals are essential for the country’s energy transition, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and strategic sectors, making the initiative a key step toward strengthening national resource security.
Objective and Strategic Importance
The newly constituted committee aims to streamline India’s approach toward critical and strategic minerals, ensuring a systematic evaluation of domestic resources. This move comes in the wake of the Ministry of Mines’ recognition of IIT (ISM), Dhanbad, as a Centre of Excellence under the National Critical Mineral Mission. The committee will focus on mapping resources, assessing viability, and recommending strategies to support India’s long-term energy and industrial objectives.

Committee Composition and Key Members
The committee brings together senior leadership and distinguished experts from premier national institutions and major mining organizations. A key highlight is the inclusion of Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NLC India Ltd., as a member. His expertise in lignite mining and sustainable resource management is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing the committee’s mission.
The committee is also empowered to invite additional experts and advisors as required, ensuring a multi-disciplinary and inclusive approach to critical mineral exploration and development.
Timeline and Expected Deliverables
The committee has been tasked with submitting a comprehensive report within 12 months. This report will provide actionable recommendations for India’s critical mineral strategy, including sustainable mining practices, resource allocation, and development of technologies for advanced manufacturing and strategic sectors.
