New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a one-year extension of the central deputation tenure of Nitin Deep Blaggan (IPS:2003:RJ), Joint Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), allowing him to continue in the agency beyond October 8, 2026.

The extension has been approved in relaxation of the IPS Tenure Policy.

Nitin Deep Blaggan’s CBI Tenure Extended Till October 2027

New Delhi, September 16, 2026: The deputation tenure of Nitin Deep Blaggan (IPS:2003:RJ), serving as Joint Director in the CBI, has been extended for a period of one year beyond October 8, 2026, which marks the completion of his eighth year on central deputation.

The ACC approved the proposal of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for the extension in relaxation of the IPS Tenure Policy.

According to the approved arrangement, Blaggan will continue in the CBI for one year beyond October 8, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

With the latest decision, his tenure as Joint Director in the CBI is set to continue until October 8, 2027, subject to the terms of the order.

Who Is Nitin Deep Blaggan?

Dr Nitin Deep Blaggan is a 2003-batch Indian Police Service officer belonging to the Rajasthan cadre.

He is a Direct Recruit (RR) officer who entered the IPS through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination.

Blaggan joined the IPS on September 1, 2003. His home state is Punjab.

An interesting aspect of his profile is his medical background. He holds an M.B.B.S. degree and entered the police service after qualifying for the civil services.

According to available service-profile information, he has completed more than two decades in the IPS and has served in several policing and investigative assignments.

From Rajasthan Police to the CBI

Blaggan spent the initial part of his career in the Rajasthan cadre, where he handled a range of policing responsibilities.

Among his significant assignments was his tenure as Deputy Inspector General of the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Jaipur.

During his state-cadre career, his assignments included responsibilities relating to organised crime, cybercrime and economic offences, among other areas of policing.

His experience in specialised policing subsequently preceded his move to the country’s premier central investigative agency.

Inducted into CBI in 2019

Blaggan was inducted into the Central Bureau of Investigation on central deputation in October 2019.

He joined the agency as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for an initial period of five years.

His central deputation was subsequently extended in July 2024 by two years, taking his tenure up to October 8, 2026.

During his CBI tenure, he progressed to a senior supervisory position within the agency.

Elevated as CBI Joint Director in 2023

In February 2023, Blaggan was appointed Joint Director in the CBI.

The elevation marked a significant step in his central deputation career, placing him in a senior supervisory role within the investigative agency.

As Joint Director, he has been associated with the supervision of investigations and other responsibilities handled by the CBI at the senior level.

His career progression at the agency has therefore taken him from DIG after his induction in 2019 to Joint Director in 2023.

Another Extension Approved in 2026

Blaggan’s CBI tenure was originally set to run until October 8, 2026 following the two-year extension approved in 2024.

The latest ACC decision now provides another one-year extension.

The extension has been specifically approved in relaxation of the IPS Tenure Policy, enabling him to continue on central deputation beyond the point at which his existing tenure was due to end.

He will continue in the CBI until October 8, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Career Profile of Dr Nitin Deep Blaggan

Blaggan’s career combines a medical education with more than two decades of policing and investigative service.

His key profile details are:

  • Service: Indian Police Service
  • Batch: 2003
  • Cadre: Rajasthan
  • Recruitment: Direct Recruit through UPSC Civil Services Examination
  • Date of joining IPS: September 1, 2003
  • Home state: Punjab
  • Educational qualification: M.B.B.S.
  • Major state assignment: DIG, Special Operations Group, Rajasthan
  • Joined CBI: October 2019 as DIG
  • Elevated as CBI Joint Director: February 2023
  • Current role: Joint Director, CBI
  • Latest decision: One-year deputation extension beyond October 8, 2026
  • Extended tenure: Up to October 8, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier

From Medical Graduate to Senior Investigating Officer

Blaggan’s professional journey is notable for the combination of his medical education and policing career.

After completing his M.B.B.S., he entered the Indian Police Service through the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2003.

His subsequent career in Rajasthan Police included specialised assignments before he moved to the CBI on central deputation in 2019.

At the CBI, he first served as a DIG and later moved into the Joint Director-level position.

The latest ACC approval will allow him to continue his central deputation for another year beyond the completion of his eighth year.

What the Latest ACC Order Means

The latest decision does not constitute a fresh appointment to the CBI. Rather, it extends Blaggan’s existing deputation tenure as Joint Director.

The extension is also notable because it has been approved in relaxation of the IPS Tenure Policy.

Under the approved arrangement, Blaggan will remain with the CBI beyond October 8, 2026, with his extended tenure running up to October 8, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The decision enables continuity in his current central assignment while making an exception to the normal tenure framework applicable to IPS officers on central deputation.
