New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the re-employment of Mr. Gurdeep Singh as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited for another six months on a contract basis.

According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on 27 July 2026, Singh’s extended tenure will begin from 1 August 2026, after the completion of his current term on 31 July 2026.

The extension has been approved following a proposal from the Ministry of Power and is intended to ensure continuity in the leadership of India’s largest integrated power utility while the process of appointing a regular successor is underway.

Gurdeep Singh to Continue as NTPC CMD for Six More Months

Gurdeep Singh will continue to serve as CMD of NTPC for an additional period of six months beyond the completion of his current tenure.

His re-employment will take effect from 1 August 2026 and will continue for six months, or until a regular incumbent assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The decision provides leadership continuity at NTPC at a time when the company is expanding its presence across conventional power generation and emerging clean energy businesses.

ACC Approves Ministry of Power’s Proposal

The extension was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet following a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Power.

The official DoPT order dated 27 July 2026 confirms that Gurdeep Singh’s re-employment has been approved on a contractual basis for a further period of six months beyond his existing tenure.

The extension is expected to provide the government with additional time to complete the process of selecting and appointing a regular CMD for NTPC.

Search for Regular NTPC CMD Still Underway

Gurdeep Singh’s existing tenure was scheduled to end on 31 July 2026. However, the selection process for his permanent successor has not yet been completed.

As part of the selection process, 18 candidates were interviewed on 4 July 2026, but no final appointment has been announced so far.

Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Power proposed a short-term extension to ensure that NTPC continues to have stable leadership while the process of appointing a regular CMD moves forward.

The six-month window will give the government additional time to finalise the next full-time CMD without creating a leadership gap at the Maharatna public sector undertaking.

Gurdeep Singh Becomes Longest-Serving CMD of a Central PSU

With the latest six-month extension, Gurdeep Singh is set to become the longest-serving CMD of any Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) in India.

He has been leading NTPC since February 2016, giving him more than a decade at the helm of the country’s largest power utility.

His continued tenure reflects the importance of leadership stability as NTPC undertakes a major expansion and diversification programme across the energy sector.

NTPC Capacity Grows Beyond 75 GW Under Gurdeep Singh

During Gurdeep Singh’s tenure, NTPC has significantly expanded its overall power generation capacity, which has grown to more than 75 GW.

The company has also increased its focus on renewable energy, particularly in the solar and wind power segments, while continuing to strengthen its conventional thermal power generation portfolio.

This approach has enabled NTPC to maintain its position as a major power producer while simultaneously preparing for India’s long-term energy transition.

NTPC Expands into Green Hydrogen, Energy Storage and Nuclear Power

Under Gurdeep Singh’s leadership, NTPC has diversified beyond traditional power generation and entered several emerging areas of the energy sector.

The company’s areas of expansion include:

  • Renewable energy, including solar and wind power
  • Green hydrogen
  • Energy storage
  • Nuclear power
  • E-mobility initiatives

The diversification is part of NTPC’s broader strategy to support India’s clean energy transition while maintaining a strong and reliable power generation base.

The company has continued to strengthen its thermal generation capacity alongside its investments in cleaner and emerging energy technologies.

Six-Month Extension to Ensure Leadership Continuity

The re-employment of Gurdeep Singh is expected to ensure continuity at NTPC while the government completes the process of selecting a regular CMD.

The extension comes at an important stage for India’s power sector, with NTPC balancing the need for reliable thermal power generation with the country’s growing focus on renewable energy and clean technologies.

The additional six-month period will allow Gurdeep Singh to continue overseeing the company’s ongoing expansion and energy transition initiatives until a regular successor takes charge or further orders are issued.
