New Delhi: NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC, plans to commence commercial operations of 500 MWh of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity soon, Chief Executive Officer Somes Bandyopadhyay said on October 8.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 18th India Coal Summit, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Bandyopadhyay said NVVN is also targeting the commissioning of an additional 500 MWh of storage capacity during the current financial year (FY27).
“Very soon we will be able to put 500 MWh BESS in commercial operation and target to commission a further 500 MWh by this financial year,” Bandyopadhyay said.
NVVN Targets Additional 500 MWh BESS Capacity in FY27
The upcoming 500 MWh capacity will mark an important operational milestone for NVVN as it expands its presence in India’s growing battery storage market.
According to Bandyopadhyay, the company plans to commission another 500 MWh of BESS capacity by the end of the current financial year.
However, NVVN has not disclosed the:
- Locations of the planned 500 MWh projects.
- Technology providers.
- Project costs.
- Tariff arrangements.
- Exact date for commencement of commercial operations.
- Distribution of the additional 500 MWh capacity across individual projects.
The immediate milestone for the company is the start of commercial operations of the first 500 MWh capacity.

Government Scheme Covers 3,000 MWh Storage Capacity
Bandyopadhyay said the government has provided NVVN with a scheme covering 3,000 MWh of battery energy storage capacity.
“The government has provided us with a scheme for 3,000 MWh. So in that way, we are into battery energy storage through different modes,” he said.
The scheme forms part of the broader policy push to establish and expand India’s Battery Energy Storage System ecosystem.
NVVN is developing large-scale BESS projects across the country as utilities increasingly require flexible storage solutions to manage electricity demand and integrate renewable power into the grid.
How Battery Energy Storage Systems Support the Grid
Battery Energy Storage Systems store electricity generated during periods of lower demand or when renewable power generation is available.
The stored electricity can then be supplied when demand rises, allowing BESS installations to support both power distribution and grid operations.
Key functions of BESS include:
- Storing electricity during periods of low demand.
- Utilising surplus renewable energy.
- Supplying electricity during peak demand periods.
- Supporting grid reliability.
- Helping utilities manage variations between electricity generation and consumption.
- Facilitating greater integration of renewable energy into the power system.
These capabilities are becoming increasingly important as India expands its renewable energy capacity and needs greater flexibility to balance intermittent generation with changing electricity demand.
NVVN Expands Large-Scale Battery Storage Projects
NVVN is developing utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems across the country to support the evolving requirements of India’s electricity sector.
The company’s planned projects are aimed at helping utilities manage peak power demand and integrate a growing share of renewable energy into the grid.
The latest commissioning plans come amid a broader national push to build a robust BESS ecosystem, with policy initiatives and capacity additions supporting the development of energy storage infrastructure.
While NVVN has outlined its near-term commissioning targets, further details about individual projects are expected as they progress towards commercial operation.
