New Delhi: State-owned power major NTPC has identified three locations in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha for setting up nuclear power plants as part of its long-term plan to add 30 GW of nuclear power capacity across 14 states by 2047.
The company has submitted detailed feasibility reports for the three identified sites to the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) for approval. NTPC is also evaluating technology partnerships with global nuclear companies for deploying pressurised water reactor (PWR) projects at these locations.
NTPC Evaluates Global Nuclear Technology Partnerships
NTPC is exploring collaborations with several international nuclear technology companies, including:
- Holtec International, US
- Westinghouse, US
- Rosatom, Russia
- EDF, France
The company is evaluating pressurised water reactor technologies for its proposed projects. NTPC has also entered into non-disclosure agreements with Rosatom and EDF to explore technology collaboration for large PWR projects in India.
According to an official familiar with the development, technology transfer and localisation will be important factors in selecting the technology and partners. A separate joint venture with a global partner is also expected for technology and design engineering.
Fuel Availability to Be Key Consideration
NTPC is also examining the fuel requirements of the proposed nuclear sites.
Fuel availability and sourcing will be important considerations while finalising the reactor technology. According to the official, nuclear fuel sourcing comes under the framework of the Central government.
The company is therefore evaluating:
- Reactor technology and operating requirements
- Technology transfer and localisation
- Fuel availability and sourcing arrangements
- Design and engineering partnerships
NTPC Targets Major Expansion in Power Capacity
NTPC currently has an installed power generation capacity of around 89 GW, including thermal, hydro and renewable energy capacity.
The company has set ambitious capacity targets:
- 149 GW by 2032
- 244 GW by 2037
- 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 across 14 states
Alongside generation capacity expansion, NTPC is also planning to add significant battery energy storage and pumped storage capacity.
NTPC Expands Nuclear Energy Portfolio
NTPC has established NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Ltd (NUPPL) as its wholly owned nuclear subsidiary to drive its nuclear power plans.
The company’s first nuclear project is the 2.8 GW Mahi Banswara project in Rajasthan, comprising four units of 700 MW each. The project is being developed through Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd, a joint venture between NTPC and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).
NTPC has also been studying potential nuclear project locations across 13 states, with discussions progressing for 34 additional sites.
Nuclear Push Supports India’s Long-Term Energy Plans
NTPC’s proposed nuclear projects are part of its broader strategy to expand its presence in nuclear energy as India targets 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047.
The company is assessing potential sites, reactor technologies, fuel arrangements and localisation opportunities as it builds a larger pipeline of nuclear projects.
The expansion is aimed at supporting India’s long-term requirements for reliable and low-carbon electricity while strengthening domestic capabilities in nuclear power technology and manufacturing.
