New Delhi: NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd. (NTPC REL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-run power major NTPC Limited, has issued a Notification of Award (NOA) to Bondada Engineering Limited for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) package for the development of a 100MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) at Khavda Solar Park, Gujarat.
The project will be developed with Delectrik Systems Pvt. Ltd. as the technology partner. The order includes the complete EPC scope along with 10 years of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) support.
The completion timeline for the project is 10 months from the receipt of the NOA.
Bondada Engineering Selected for Expertise in Renewable Energy Projects
The contract award reflects NTPC REL’s confidence in Bondada Engineering’s technical expertise, execution capabilities, proven track record in delivering large-scale renewable energy projects, and its ability to adopt emerging energy storage technologies.
The project represents a major step towards expanding India’s advanced energy storage infrastructure and supporting the growing renewable energy ecosystem.

VRFB Technology to Provide Long-Term Energy Storage Solution
The Khavda Solar Park project holds strategic importance as it will use Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) technology, a next-generation energy storage solution designed for long-duration energy storage applications.
VRFB technology offers several advantages over conventional Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery systems, including:
- Operational life of more than 25 years
- High intrinsic safety
- Stable performance during frequent charging and discharging cycles
- Near-zero degradation over its lifetime
- Lower long-term operational expenditure
- Improved suitability for large-scale energy storage applications
Unlike LFP batteries, which largely depend on imported battery cells and generally have a lifespan of around 12–15 years, VRFB systems provide greater durability and reliability for grid-scale applications.
VRFB Adoption Supports India’s Energy Security Goals
India has domestic resources of vanadium, which can help reduce long-term dependence on imported energy storage components.
The adoption of VRFB technology aligns with the Government of India’s vision of strengthening indigenous energy security and promoting advanced clean energy solutions.
The technology is expected to play an important role in supporting renewable energy integration by improving grid stability and enabling efficient storage of renewable power.
India’s Energy Storage Market Set for Major Growth
The Government of India has set an ambitious target of deploying around 236 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) by 2030.
Currently, India’s installed battery energy storage capacity stands at approximately 3.3 GWh, indicating significant growth potential in the sector.
The increasing deployment of renewable energy projects and the rising need for grid balancing solutions are expected to drive demand for advanced battery storage technologies, including Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) systems.
Bondada Engineering Secures India’s Largest Grid-Scale VRFB Project
With this landmark order, Bondada Engineering has secured India’s first and largest grid-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) project.
The achievement strengthens the company’s presence in the rapidly expanding Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) segment and complements its existing renewable energy EPC portfolio.
The company stated that it will continue focusing on next-generation technologies and actively participate in India’s clean energy transition by delivering innovative, sustainable, and technology-driven infrastructure solutions.
