Chennai: India’s traditional Palmyra-based products have entered the Bulgarian market, with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitating the maiden export of 1.755 metric tonnes (MT) of certified organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder from Tamil Nadu to Bulgaria.

The consignment was flagged off on October 15, 2026, from Gobichettipalayam in Erode district for Varna, Bulgaria. The shipment is certified under India’s National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and European Union (EU) organic standards.

The initiative, undertaken under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, aims to expand international market access for Tamil Nadu’s traditional Palmyra-based products and diversify India’s organic agricultural exports.

Organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder Enters European Market

The consignment was manufactured and exported by Wellbeing Foods, Erode, in collaboration with Chetty Exports Private Limited, Chennai. The overseas importer and distributor is Sow Life Ltd, Bulgaria.

The shipment will be transported by sea through Chennai Port before reaching its destination.

The consignment marks the first export of this product to Bulgaria.

Organic Cultivation Across 137 Acres to Support Export Supply

The export initiative covers 137 acres under organic cultivation and is intended to strengthen market linkages for producers involved in growing Palmyra-based products.

According to APEDA, the export opportunity could improve market access for participating farmers and support the development of export-oriented value chains.

The reported price realisation is approximately 15–22% for farmers and 17% higher for the manufacturer compared with the domestic market. These figures indicate the price differences reported for the export opportunity; the release does not specify the underlying calculation method.

The initiative focuses on connecting producers and manufacturers with overseas buyers while meeting the certification and quality requirements of international markets.

Palmyra Blossom Nectar Offers Scope for Value Addition

Palmyra Jaggery Powder is derived from the nectar of Palmyra palm blossoms and is used as a traditional sweetener in India.

The product is an alternative to refined sugar, noting its potential nutritional benefits, including vitamins and minerals.

Palmyra-based products are associated with traditional production practices and the agricultural and cultural landscape of Tamil Nadu. Developing certified, export-ready products from this resource could broaden market opportunities for producers and other participants in the supply chain.

APEDA Leads Export Flag-Off in Tamil Nadu

APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev (IAS: 2007: AGMUT), flagged off the consignment. The event was attended by APEDA Secretary Dr. Saswati Bose, senior APEDA officials, representatives of the exporting companies, international partners, progressive rice farmers and other stakeholders associated with the export value chain.

APEDA, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitates exports of agricultural and processed food products by supporting market development, quality compliance and connections between Indian producers and overseas buyers.

The maiden shipment of organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder to Bulgaria adds a new destination for Tamil Nadu’s traditional product and forms part of efforts to expand India’s certified organic and value-added agricultural exports.
