What Is PM JANMAN Yojana? 48.52 Lakh PVTG Population Identified Across 18 States, 1 UT

PM JANMAN is being implemented through 11 interventions across 18 States and one Union Territory to improve housing, roads, water, health, education, connectivity and livelihoods for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.

New Delhi: The Government is implementing the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN) to improve socio-economic conditions and access to basic facilities for 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) communities across 18 States and one Union Territory.

The scheme covers interventions related to housing, drinking water, education, healthcare and nutrition, road and telecom connectivity, electrification and sustainable livelihood opportunities. The programme is being implemented through 11 interventions involving nine Central ministries.

As of June 30, 2026, habitation-level data collected through the PM Gati Shakti mobile application has identified 12.37 lakh PVTG households with a population of 48.52 lakh across the covered States and Union Territory.

Madhya Pradesh Records Largest PVTG Population

Among the States, Madhya Pradesh has the largest PVTG population identified through the habitation survey, followed by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

  • Madhya Pradesh: 13.85 lakh PVTG population
  • Maharashtra: 6.75 lakh
  • Andhra Pradesh: 5.22 lakh
  • Jharkhand: 4.04 lakh
  • Tamil Nadu: 3.68 lakh
  • Odisha: 3.13 lakh
  • Tripura: 2.75 lakh
  • Chhattisgarh: 2.35 lakh

The survey is being used to identify PVTG habitations, population and infrastructure gaps to support coverage under PM JANMAN. The Government clarified that the actual number of beneficiaries will depend on the eligibility criteria prescribed for individual interventions.

Nearly 4.83 Lakh Houses Sanctioned

Under the rural housing component implemented through the Ministry of Rural Development, 4,82,554 houses had been sanctioned, of which 3,05,860 had been completed as of June 30, 2026.

Madhya Pradesh accounted for the highest number of houses sanctioned at 1,89,574, followed by Maharashtra at 54,095 and Andhra Pradesh at 43,593.

Roads and Water Infrastructure

Under the road component, 7,991.93 km of roads had been sanctioned, with 2,948 km completed.

Madhya Pradesh had the highest road length sanctioned at 2,221.76 km, followed by Chhattisgarh at 2,901.95 km and Jharkhand at 1,204.94 km.

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, 18,756 villages had been sanctioned for coverage, while 8,799 villages had been saturated.

Electrification and Livelihood Support

The programme has also progressed on household electrification and renewable-energy interventions.

  • 1,46,291 households had been sanctioned under the RDSS component, with 1,35,209 electrified.
  • Under the MNRE component, 8,852 households had been sanctioned for electrification, with 7,447 electrified.
  • 540 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs) had been sanctioned, of which 491 had started business.

PM JANMAN Uses Habitation-Level Data

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, along with State Governments and the UT administration, has undertaken habitation-level data collection through the PM Gati Shakti mobile application.

The exercise is intended to identify PVTG populations living in villages and habitations covered by PM JANMAN and assess gaps in infrastructure and basic services.
