Chamoli: The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), a flagship skill development initiative of the Central government, is driving significant improvements in workforce capabilities and women’s empowerment across India.

In Chamoli, the scheme has enabled many women to gain vocational skills and achieve financial independence through sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Skill Training Opening New Doors for Women

Under PMKVY, nearly 200 women in Chamoli have received training in various vocational activities such as:

  • Jute bag making
  • Handicrafts
  • Tailoring

These skills have allowed them to participate in income-generating activities, either individually or through Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

From Training to Entrepreneurship

Several beneficiaries have successfully transformed their training into small businesses. With growing market demand for eco-friendly products like jute bags and traditional handicrafts, these women have been able to establish a steady source of income.

Their journey reflects a shift from dependence to self-reliance, as many now contribute actively to their household finances.

Boost in Confidence and Social Empowerment

Beyond economic gains, the scheme has significantly boosted confidence and social standing among the women. Beneficiaries reported that acquiring skills has:

  • Helped them become self-reliant
  • Improved their decision-making role in families
  • Enhanced their identity in society

Voices from Beneficiaries

Women who participated in the program shared how the initiative has changed their lives:

  • Priyanka Devi said the tailoring training has helped them stitch clothes independently and will benefit them in the long run.
  • Himanshi highlighted that the government-led training improves their chances of securing employment in the future.
  • Seema emphasized that learning new skills has given them a sense of identity and independence, reducing reliance on others.

Driving Inclusive Growth Through Skill Development

The PMKVY initiative continues to play a crucial role in promoting inclusive growth by:

  • Bridging skill gaps
  • Enhancing employability
  • Encouraging entrepreneurship

By empowering women at the grassroots level, the scheme is contributing to both economic development and social transformation.

The success of PMKVY in Chamoli showcases how targeted skill development programs can uplift communities. By equipping women with practical skills and opportunities, the initiative is fostering self-reliance, financial stability, and long-term empowerment.
