New Delhi: State-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has emerged as the successful bidder for developing a major Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project aimed at supporting upcoming green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in Andhra Pradesh.
The company secured the project through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process and received the Letter of Intent (LoI) on June 12, 2026, according to a regulatory filing.
Project to Support Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Development
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited will develop the transmission system titled “Transmission System for Proposed Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia Projects in Kakinada Area (Phase-I)”.
The project is designed to strengthen power evacuation and grid connectivity for upcoming green hydrogen and green ammonia facilities in the Kakinada region of Andhra Pradesh, which is emerging as a key hub for clean energy investments.
Key Infrastructure Under the Project
The transmission project will include the development of critical grid infrastructure such as:
- A new 765/400 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS)
- STATCOM system for voltage stability support
- Associated 765 kV transmission lines
- Strengthening of inter-state power transmission network
The project will be implemented on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis.
Boost to India’s Green Energy Transition
The project is expected to play an important role in strengthening India’s renewable energy ecosystem, particularly in the rapidly growing green hydrogen and green ammonia sector.
With rising investments in clean fuels, robust transmission infrastructure is seen as essential for efficient power evacuation and integration of large-scale renewable energy projects into the national grid.
Strengthening Transmission Network for Future Energy Needs
Officials noted that the ISTS project will enhance grid reliability and support long-term energy transition goals. It will also help in enabling large industrial-scale green hydrogen production facilities in Andhra Pradesh.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy to expand clean energy infrastructure and reduce carbon emissions.
The award of this transmission project marks another milestone for POWERGRID in expanding India’s high-voltage transmission infrastructure. The project is expected to significantly support upcoming green hydrogen and green ammonia developments in the Kakinada region.
