RBI Approves Full Banking Operations on September 27
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the opening and continued operation of bank branches and other relevant banking facilities on September 27.
According to the government, the approval covers:
- All bank branches
- Bank offices
- ATM-link branches
- Currency Chests
These facilities will remain fully operational on September 27, 2026, helping customers meet their banking requirements before the proposed strike.
Three-Day Bank Strike Scheduled From September 28
The decision comes against the backdrop of a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30, 2026, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions.
With September 26 and 27 falling on the preceding weekend, the proposed strike could otherwise lead to a prolonged period during which customers may face limited access to banking services.
The government has therefore taken steps to ensure that customers have an additional opportunity to access banking facilities on September 27.
Government Appeals to Unions to Defer Strike
The government and bank managements have appealed to the unions to defer the proposed strike.
At the same time, measures have been put in place to ensure that essential banking services continue without interruption and that customers’ genuine banking requirements are not adversely affected.
The Department reiterated that the welfare and convenience of bank customers remains the Government’s foremost priority.
Essential Banking Services to Continue
The decision to keep banks operational on Sunday is intended to minimise the impact of the proposed strike and provide customers with access to essential banking services.
By allowing banking branches, offices, ATM-link branches and Currency Chests to operate on September 27, the authorities aim to reduce the possibility of an extended disruption during the period covering the weekend holidays and proposed strike.
