New Delhi: BEML Limited underscored the importance of MSME partnerships in building a resilient and future-ready manufacturing ecosystem at the National Defence Industries Conclave – Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (NDIC–AMTS) 2026, held at the Manekshaw Centre.
Speaking at a high-level panel discussion, Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy highlighted how MSMEs play a critical role in strengthening India’s defence and industrial capabilities.
MSMEs: The Backbone of Industrial Strength
During the session on Main Battle Tanks, Armoured Platforms, Military Logistics, and Special Vehicles, Roy emphasized that while large engineering platforms demonstrate scale and advanced technology, their true strength lies in the supporting ecosystem.
He stated, “While scale drives efficiency in manufacturing, the depth provided by MSME partners builds resilience and positions BEML as a globally competitive enterprise.”
MSMEs contribute significantly across the value chain, including:
- Design and engineering
- Precision manufacturing
- Fabrication and assembly
- Lifecycle maintenance and support

Strong MSME Network Driving Growth
BEML’s robust vendor ecosystem includes over 1,066 MSMEs out of 1,785 approved vendors, reflecting its deep integration with the small and medium enterprise sector.
This collaboration has enabled high levels of indigenisation across key segments:
- 95% indigenisation in High Mobility Vehicles
- 90% in Mining & Construction equipment
- 65% in Rail and Metro systems
From defence vehicles operating in extreme terrains to metro systems serving millions and heavy mining machinery in remote areas, BEML’s platforms are powered by this extensive MSME network.
Rising MSME Contribution in Procurement
The growing importance of MSMEs is also evident in BEML’s procurement trends. Over the past three years, sourcing from MSMEs has more than doubled—from approximately ₹700 crore to ₹1,600 crore.
Currently, MSMEs contribute nearly 40% of BEML’s domestic procurement, showcasing their increasing role in the company’s supply chain and overall growth strategy.

Advancing Indigenisation in Defence Manufacturing
MSMEs have been instrumental in advancing India’s indigenisation goals by delivering critical components such as:
- Driver cabins
- Brake systems
- Engine components
- Suspension systems
Their agility, innovation, and reliability have strengthened India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, aligning with the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
BEML Invites MSMEs for Future Collaboration
Reinforcing its commitment to inclusive growth, BEML continues to invite capable and emerging MSMEs to collaborate on next-generation projects. These include advanced defence systems, high-speed rail, and modern mobility platforms.
The company aims to build not just manufacturing scale, but also depth, resilience, and global competitiveness through strong industry partnerships.
