Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Saturday paid heartfelt tributes to 1951-batch retired IPS officer Jagjit Singh Bawa as he celebrated his 100th birthday, describing him as one of the finest officers produced by the Punjab cadre.

In a message shared on social media, the DGP praised Bawa as a towering personality who represented a generation of officers that built the foundations of professional, ethical and courageous policing in the state. He noted that the Punjab cadre has earned national respect for its resilience and leadership, and Bawa remains one of its most distinguished icons.

Senior Officers Visit Veteran Officer to Convey Force’s Respect

To personally extend greetings on behalf of the entire force, Special DGP (Headquarters) SS Srivastava and DIG (Personnel) Amneet Kondal visited the veteran officer at his residence. The visit symbolised the deep regard the department continues to hold for its former leaders.

The DGP stated that Bawa’s century-long journey is not just a personal milestone but a proud moment for the entire Punjab Police fraternity, reflecting a lifetime dedicated to public service and national duty.

Distinguished Career from Punjab Cadre to CBI Director

Jagjit Singh Bawa joined the Indian Police Service on July 13, 1951. Over the decades, he served in multiple districts as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and Superintendent of Police (SP) before being appointed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ferozepur.

He later held key positions as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP), eventually serving as IGP Punjab. On September 27, 1977, he proceeded on central deputation as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation in New Delhi. He retired on February 28, 1985, after receiving a one-year extension beyond the age of superannuation.

A Legacy of Integrity, Leadership and Public Trust

DGP Gaurav Yadav remarked that through his tenure as IGP Punjab and Director CBI, Bawa upheld the highest standards of integrity and institutional strength. His leadership reinforced public trust in law enforcement institutions during critical periods.

“As we celebrate this rare milestone, Punjab Police honours a century of life devoted to duty, honour and service to the nation,” the DGP said, adding that Bawa’s career continues to inspire officers across generations.
