Kishtwar: A major awareness programme under the ongoing “Nasha Mukt JK Abhiyan” was held in Kishtwar on April 24, 2026, witnessing participation from over 300 people, including officials, teachers, students, and members of various departments.

The event was organized by the District Administration at the Government Degree College Auditorium under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma (JKAS), reflecting a strong community push to eliminate drug abuse in the district.

Rahul Yadav (IAS), Managing Director of J&K Power Development Corporation Limited and District Mentor for the campaign, attended the programme as the Chief Guest.

The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by a welcome address by Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma, who emphasized the importance of collective efforts in combating drug abuse.

He highlighted that Kishtwar is fortunate to have Rahul Yadav as District Mentor, noting that his guidance would strengthen the campaign further.

Extensive Outreach Under ‘Nasha Mukt JK Abhiyan’

The Deputy Commissioner informed that the campaign, launched on April 11 under the directions of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, has already achieved significant outreach in just 13 days:

  • Coverage of over 760 schools
  • Awareness drives in 136 panchayats
  • Activities across 11 municipal wards

He noted that Kishtwar remains relatively less affected by drug abuse due to strong community bonds and vigilant monitoring systems in educational institutions.

Focus on Rehabilitation and Social Support

Highlighting rehabilitation efforts, the Deputy Commissioner stated that Kishtwar has been proactive under Mission YUVA, where two drug-affected individuals have been successfully rehabilitated and provided financial assistance through loans.

He stressed that individuals affected by substance abuse should be treated as victims requiring care and support, rather than stigma, emphasizing a humane approach to recovery.

Cultural Performances Promote Drug-Free Message

The programme also featured a range of awareness-driven performances:

  • Yoga demonstrations by students of BVM High School
  • Nukkad Natak by Sir Iqbal Academy students
  • Thematic dance performance by artist Tavishi Anand

These activities aimed to creatively spread the message of a drug-free society among youth and the wider community.

Rahul Yadav Emphasizes Education and Awareness

Addressing the gathering, IAS Rahul Yadav appreciated the efforts of the district administration and stressed the critical role of education in preventing drug abuse.

He underlined the need for:

  • Capacity building of teachers
  • Long-term behavioural change among youth
  • Addressing drug abuse with seriousness and sensitivity

He also pointed out that suspected drug-related deaths should not be ignored due to social stigma, emphasizing the importance of post-mortem examinations to determine causes and trace sources of substance abuse.

Pledge for a Drug-Free Society

At the conclusion of the programme, Rahul Yadav administered the “Nasha Mukt JK Pledge”, with all participants reaffirming their commitment to building a drug-free Kishtwar.
