Raipur: The highly anticipated Raipur Literature Festival 2026 officially commenced today at the Purkhauti Mukhtangan complex in Nawa Raipur. The inaugural ceremony, graced by the distinguished presence of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, Mr. Hariwansh, and Chief Minister Mr. Vishnu Deo Sai, set the tone for this three-day literary extravaganza, drawing attention to the importance of literature in shaping society and the nation.

The opening event, held at the Vinod Kumar Shukla Mandap, was a grand affair with the presence of dignitaries including Deputy Chief Minister Arun Saw, Dr. Kumud Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University, Wardha, renowned actor and theatre artist Manoj Joshi, and several eminent literary figures. The ceremony also saw the release of several books, including a publication commemorating 25 years of Chhattisgarh, a coffee table book on Chhattisgarh’s literary heritage, and works by notable authors like J. Nandakumar and Rajeev Ranjan Prasad.

In his address, Mr. Hariwansh began by paying tribute to the late Vinod Kumar Shukla, a prominent figure in Chhattisgarh’s literary world. Highlighting the importance of literature, he remarked that a single book or writer has the potential to change the world, adding that literature provides direction, hope, and the courage to overcome adversities.
Mr. Hariwansh also underscored the significant role of literature in shaping India’s journey towards self-reliance and its position as a growing global power. He referred to India’s fast-growing economy, leadership in steel and rice production, and the increasing prominence of startups, all of which have been fueled by the nation’s rich literary traditions.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai: Literature’s Role in Strengthening Cultural Heritage
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai spoke about the pride of Chhattisgarh, stating that the state’s connection with Lord Ram’s maternal side adds to the cultural and historical richness of the region. He expressed his pride in the inauguration of Raipur Literature Festival 2026, describing it as a Mahakumbh of literature, which brings together over 120 distinguished writers from across the country. The festival will include 42 sessions focusing on contemporary social, cultural, and political issues.
Mr. Sahay drew parallels between the Indian freedom struggle and the ocean churning process, where both poison and nectar emerged. He emphasized that many freedom fighters were also writers, journalists, and lawyers, whose contributions through literature, like Makhmalal Chaturvedi’s Pushp Ki Abhilasha, inspired millions during the freedom movement. He also celebrated the contributions of Chhattisgarh’s literary figures such as Pandit Lochan Prasad Pandey, Padumlal Punnalal Bakshi, and Gajanan Madhav MuktiBodh. The construction of the Triveni Museum in Rajnandgaon is a reflection of the state’s commitment to preserving their legacy.

Chief Minister Sahay pointed out that the festival’s pavilions are dedicated to illustrious literary figures like Vinod Kumar Shukla, Shyamalal Chaturvedi, Lala Jagdalpuri, and Aniruddh Nirav, who have given Chhattisgarh’s literature a distinct identity. He emphasized that poetry, especially, teaches resistance against injustice, underlining literature’s true power.
He also highlighted the Poetry Reading Session organized in memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose poetry continues to inspire generations. Citing his iconic poem “Haar Nahi Maanunga…”, Chief Minister Sahay remarked that Vajpayee’s words continue to serve as a source of strength and encouragement for millions.
