From Milan to Asmara: IFS Officer Raj Kamal Appointed India’s Next Ambassador to Eritrea by MEA

India Strengthens Diplomatic Ties with Eritrea; Raj Kamal Appointed Ambassador
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: In a key diplomatic development, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday announced the appointment of Raj Kamal, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of 2009 batch, as the next Ambassador of India to the State of Eritrea.

Currently serving at the Consulate General of India in Milan, Mr Kamal is expected to assume his new assignment shortly.

A Seasoned Diplomat with Diverse International Experience

IFS Kamal brings with him a rich diplomatic portfolio and over a decade of experience in India’s foreign service. His previous international postings include:

  • Second Secretary in Trinidad and Tobago
  • Second Secretary (Consular) in Argentina
  • Director (East & Southern Africa) at the MEA headquarters in New Delhi

His latest role in Milan, combined with deep familiarity with African affairs through his work in the East & Southern Africa Division, makes him a strategic fit for India’s diplomatic mission in Eritrea.

India-Eritrea Relations: A Growing Bilateral Partnership

India and Eritrea established diplomatic relations in 1993, and the relationship has since evolved through-

  • Capacity building programs
  • Educational cooperation and scholarships under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scheme
  • Agricultural partnerships and trade agreements
  • Foreign Office Consultations to enhance bilateral dialogue

Notably, India’s historical presence in Eritrea dates back to World War II, where Indian soldiers were involved in battles on Eritrean soil, adding a historical depth to modern diplomatic ties.

What This Appointment Signifies

Mr Kamal’s appointment is seen as a move to further consolidate India’s growing footprint in Africa, especially in the strategically located Horn of Africa. Eritrea, with its Red Sea coastline and proximity to key international shipping lanes, holds geostrategic importance. India’s development aid, technical assistance, and educational support continue to be central pillars in fostering goodwill and strategic cooperation in the region.

Official Announcement

According to a release by the Ministry of External Affairs –

“Raj Kamal, presently posted in the Consulate General of India, Milan, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the State of Eritrea. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”
