Bhopal: Retired IAS officer Rakesh Agrawal, a 1982-batch Madhya Pradesh cadre officer, was allegedly murdered inside his residence in Bhopal’s Suraj Nagar area on Wednesday. The 70-year-old former bureaucrat was found dead at his home under the jurisdiction of Ratibad police station.
Police suspect a newly hired domestic worker, who reportedly joined the household just two days before the incident and has been missing since the murder.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Bhopal and the Madhya Pradesh administrative community, given Agrawal’s long and distinguished career in public service.
Retired IAS Officer Found Dead at Bhopal Residence
The incident took place in Suraj Nagar, Bhopal, under Ratibad police station limits.
According to police information, the authorities received information about the incident at around 5 am on Wednesday. Senior police officials subsequently reached the residence and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
Agrawal was reportedly living at the house with his wife.
Newly Hired Domestic Worker Under Suspicion
Police suspicion has reportedly focused on a domestic worker who had been hired by the family only two days before the incident.
The worker is reportedly missing following the incident, prompting police and Crime Branch teams to search for him.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the worker’s disappearance and his possible connection to the incident. Police are also looking into other possible angles behind the killing.
Police, Crime Branch and Forensic Teams Investigate
Police and Crime Branch teams have been deployed to trace the missing domestic worker and establish the sequence of events.
Investigators are examining several possible motives, including:
- A possible dispute
- Robbery or theft-related motive
- Personal enmity
- Other circumstances that may have led to the incident
A forensic team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) also visited the residence and collected evidence.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area as part of the investigation.

Rakesh Agrawal was a retired Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1982 Madhya Pradesh cadre.
According to the details provided, he was born on June 2, 1956, and had academic qualifications including:
- LL.B. in Law
- Postgraduate degree in Political Science
- MBA in Business Administration
During his administrative career, Agrawal held several positions, including District Collector, Deputy Secretary, Joint Secretary, Additional Secretary, Managing Director, Director, Secretary and Principal Secretary.
His last reported position was Director General in Bhopal, where he served from December 1, 2011, to June 30, 2016. He was also associated with the RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration and Management.
Investigation Underway in Bhopal
The police investigation is continuing, with teams working to locate the missing domestic worker and establish the sequence of events.
CCTV footage, forensic evidence and other available inputs are being examined to determine what led to the incident. Police are also investigating the possibility of other persons being involved.
