New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday distributed bicycles to around 200 Class 9 girl students from Zone 7 of North Delhi under the Vidya Vahini Yojana. The distribution took place at the Delhi Assembly premises and is aimed at making school travel easier while encouraging girls to continue their education.

The scheme focuses on students who face transportation difficulties, particularly those travelling longer distances to reach their schools. By making daily commuting more convenient and affordable, the initiative aims to support regular attendance, reduce dropout rates and promote greater independence among girl students.

Vidya Vahini Yojana to Reach 1.40 Lakh Girls

Under the Vidya Vahini Yojana, the Delhi government plans to provide bicycles to around 1.40 lakh Class 9 girl students studying in government schools across the capital this year.

The initiative is designed to address transportation-related challenges that can make it difficult for students to attend school regularly.

The government expects the scheme to help:

  • Make daily school travel easier.
  • Encourage regular attendance.
  • Reduce the risk of students dropping out.
  • Lower transportation-related difficulties for families.
  • Promote greater independence among girl students.
  • Encourage girls to continue their education.

Over 3,000 Girls Already Benefited

According to information shared by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on her official X account, more than 3,000 girls have already received free bicycles under the Vidya Vahini initiative.

The Chief Minister said that 200 more girls joined the Vidya Vahini family on Monday as bicycles were handed over to them at the Delhi Assembly premises. The government has set a target of extending the facility to more than 1.40 lakh girls studying in Class 9 in government schools across Delhi.

CM Rekha Gupta Calls Bicycles a Tool for Education and Independence

Speaking at the event, CM Rekha Gupta said bicycles should not be viewed merely as a means of transportation but as a way of supporting girls’ education and independence.

She emphasised that the government wants to ensure that no girl’s education is affected because of distance or difficulties in travelling to school. The Chief Minister had earlier distributed more than 3,000 bicycles on July 31 at the East Vinod Nagar Sports Complex.

‘No Girl Should Be Left Behind Due to Transportation Issues’

Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood highlighted the importance of the initiative in helping girl students become more self-reliant.

He said transportation difficulties can often become a barrier to education and stressed that the government is committed to ensuring that no girl is left behind because of such challenges.

Students who received the bicycles also said the initiative would make their daily journeys to school more convenient and give them greater confidence to continue their education.

Government Focuses on Easier School Commutes

The bicycle distribution is part of the Delhi government’s broader efforts to improve accessibility for school-going girls.

By reducing the challenges associated with daily travel, the Vidya Vahini Yojana aims to create a more supportive environment for girls to attend school regularly and complete their education. The initiative also seeks to reduce concerns faced by families regarding their daughters’ daily commute.

CM Rekha Gupta Shares Message for Girl Students

In her message, CM Rekha Gupta said the government’s objective is to ensure that no girl in Delhi faces disruption to her education because of distance or transportation difficulties. She said the effort is aimed at making school travel easier, reducing concerns for families and enabling girls to pursue their studies with confidence and work towards their aspirations.

The Chief Minister also extended her wishes for the well-being and bright future of the beneficiaries, expressing hope that they continue their educational journey with strength, courage and confidence.
