Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Jitender (IPS: 1992:TG) is set to retire on September 30, 2025, kicking off a competitive race for his successor. According to sources, two senior Indian Police Service officers are in contention for the prestigious post — C V Anand (IPS: 1991:TG), currently the Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, and B Shivadhar Reddy (IPS: 1994:TG), the DGP of Intelligence.
CV Anand Holds the Seniority Edge
Based on the latest gradation list, C V Anand is the second senior-most officer in the Telangana cadre. The senior-most officer, Ravi Gupta (IPS: 1990:TG), is due to retire on December 31, 2025. However, Supreme Court guidelines require a candidate to have at least six months of service left when assuming the post. Since Gupta will have only three months of service after Jitender’s retirement, he is not eligible for the position.
Other Contenders and Their Standing
Apte Vinayak Prabhakar (IPS: 1994:TG), third senior-most, is on central deputation with the Intelligence Bureau and is unlikely to return soon.
Kothakota Sreenivasa Reddy (IPS: 1994:TG), fourth in seniority, is set to retire on August 31, 2025, just a month before Jitender’s retirement.
B Shivadhar Reddy (IPS: 1994:TG), who retires in April 2026, remains the strongest alternative contender to CV Anand.
Soumya Mishra (IPS: 1994:TG), sixth in seniority and DG of Prisons & Correctional Services, is not considered a frontrunner.
The Frontrunner: CV Anand
Sources indicate that CV Anand currently has the clear edge in the race for the top police post in Telangana, due to his seniority and strong administrative record as Hyderabad City Police Commissioner.
As the retirement of Jitender draws near, all eyes are on the Telangana government’s decision. The appointment will mark a significant moment in the state’s law enforcement leadership.
