Agartala/New Delhi: The investigation into the death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, an IPS officer of 1994 batch, has entered a crucial phase, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Tripura Government reaching New Delhi to pursue multiple leads. The team is expected to collect digital and documentary evidence, record statements and visit the senior IPS officer’s residence in Uttar Pradesh as part of its comprehensive inquiry.

The SIT’s visit marks a significant development in the high-profile case, which has attracted widespread public attention following the unnatural death of one of the state’s senior-most police officers.

SIT Formed Under West Tripura SP

The Tripura Government constituted the Special Investigation Team to ensure a thorough, coordinated and time-bound investigation into the case registered at West Agartala Police Station.

The SIT is headed by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak and comprises:

  • Inspector Rana Chatterjee, Officer-in-Charge, Amtali Police Station
  • Women Inspector Shiuli Das, Officer-in-Charge, West Agartala Women Police Station
  • Sub-Inspector Subhendu Das, Officer-in-Charge, Ramanagar Town Outpost

According to official sources, the officers have already reached the national capital to begin the next phase of the investigation.

Team to Visit Uttar Pradesh Residence

As part of the investigation, the SIT is also scheduled to visit DGP Anurag Dhankar’s residence in Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, where investigators are expected to question his wife and gather information that could help establish the circumstances leading to his death.

Officials said the interaction forms part of the team’s effort to pursue every possible lead in the case.

Focus on Digital and Documentary Evidence

Sources indicated that investigators are concentrating on collecting documentary as well as electronic evidence.

The SIT is expected to:

  • Examine digital and electronic records.
  • Verify communication details and other relevant documents.
  • Record statements of individuals who may possess information connected with the case.
  • Reconstruct the sequence of events preceding the DGP’s death.

Investigators are also expected to verify the senior officer’s recent movements and communications as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Unnatural Death Case Under Investigation

The probe pertains to an unnatural death case registered at West Agartala Police Station.

An official order issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police stated that the SIT had been constituted to ensure a comprehensive, coordinated and expeditious investigation into the incident.

Officials have maintained that the inquiry will proceed scientifically and impartially, with every available piece of evidence being examined before any conclusions are drawn.

Police Urge Public Not to Speculate

The death of DGP Anurag Dhankar has triggered intense public discussion, with various reports and rumours circulating on social media and other platforms.

However, neither the Tripura Government nor the state police have officially confirmed many of these claims.

Senior police officials have reportedly described several circulating reports as speculative and appealed to the public to refrain from drawing conclusions until the investigation is completed.

Family Angle Also Under Examination

Police sources indicated that investigators are also examining whether family-related issues may have played any role in the alleged suicide.

However, officials stressed that no conclusive findings have been reached so far. The exact cause and circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation, and authorities have refrained from making any official statement regarding possible motives.

Investigation to Continue on Evidence

Given the seniority of the officer and the sensitivity of the case, the Tripura Government has emphasised that the investigation will be conducted with complete fairness, transparency and professionalism.

Officials have reiterated that any action or conclusions will be based solely on evidence collected during the investigation. Until the SIT completes its inquiry and submits its report, the circumstances surrounding DGP Anurag Dhankar’s death will continue to remain under official investigation.
