Uttar Pradesh’s 22-Expressway Network Boosts Connectivity, Logistics and Industrial Growth

With 7 expressways operational, 5 under construction and 10 proposed, Uttar Pradesh is strengthening links between cities, villages and markets while driving trade, investment and manufacturing.
Indian Masterminds Stories

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a major expressway hub, with a network of 22 expressways aimed at improving connectivity between cities, towns, villages and markets. The expanding road infrastructure is not only making long-distance travel easier but is also creating new opportunities for trade, logistics, investment and industrial growth.

Of the 22 expressways in the state, 7 are operational, 5 are under construction and 10 are proposed. The network is estimated to account for around 55% of the country’s expressway network, highlighting Uttar Pradesh’s growing role in India’s road infrastructure.

22 Expressways to Strengthen UP’s Connectivity

The state’s expanding expressway network is designed to improve the movement of people and goods across different regions.

The infrastructure is expected to provide:

  • Faster connectivity between cities, towns and markets.
  • Reduced travel time for long-distance journeys.
  • Easier movement of agricultural and industrial products.
  • Better access to markets for local businesses.
  • Improved connectivity for farmers, traders, students and workers.

The network is also helping reduce the distance between rural and urban areas by improving access to essential facilities.

Better Access to Markets, Schools and Hospitals

Improved road connectivity can make it easier for people in villages and smaller towns to reach mandis, schools, hospitals and district headquarters.

For farmers and local producers, better roads can facilitate the movement of agricultural and other products to larger markets.

For businesses, faster transportation can reduce logistical challenges and improve access to customers and suppliers across the state.

Expressways to Support Trade and Logistics

The growing expressway network is expected to play an important role in strengthening logistics and supply chains in Uttar Pradesh.

Better road connectivity can help companies move raw materials and finished products more efficiently across different regions.

The network can also support the development of new warehouses, logistics centres and business hubs along major transportation corridors.

Defence and Aerospace Industry Could Benefit

The expressway network is particularly significant for industrial corridors and emerging sectors such as defence and aerospace.

For example, defence and aerospace products manufactured in Lucknow can benefit from improved road connectivity for transportation towards eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

At the same time, raw materials and supplies arriving from eastern regions can potentially be transported more efficiently towards central and western Uttar Pradesh.

This connectivity could help strengthen supply chains linking industrial clusters with major markets.

Industries to Develop Around Expressways

Uttar Pradesh’s strategy is not limited to using expressways simply as transportation routes.

The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is also working towards developing Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics Clusters around expressways.

The objective is to use improved connectivity to encourage industrial and logistics activity along these corridors.

The broader development model could include:

  • Industrial land
  • Warehousing facilities
  • Logistics centres
  • Manufacturing units
  • Business and commercial hubs

These facilities can benefit from direct access to the state’s expanding expressway network.

Expressways Could Create New Industrial Growth Corridors

The combination of expressway connectivity and industrial development could create integrated economic corridors across Uttar Pradesh.

In the coming years, industrial areas, manufacturing facilities and logistics centres could emerge around major expressways, while nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor remain connected through the wider road network.

This could improve the movement of goods, strengthen supply chains and create a more integrated industrial ecosystem across the state.

Rural and Urban Uttar Pradesh Getting Better Connected

The expanding expressway network is also narrowing the connectivity gap between rural and urban areas.

With improved roads, villages and smaller towns can gain easier access to:

  • Major cities
  • Agricultural markets
  • Educational institutions
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Industrial centres
  • Larger consumer markets

The resulting connectivity can support both economic activity and easier day-to-day movement for residents.

UP’s Expressway Network Supports Wider Economic Growth

With operational, under-construction and proposed expressways expanding the state’s road infrastructure, Uttar Pradesh is positioning connectivity as an important driver of economic development.

The network is expected to support faster travel, efficient logistics, industrial expansion, investment and access to larger markets, while also creating opportunities for manufacturing and warehousing along major corridors.
