Dehradun: Uttarakhand is set to develop eight forest areas as eco-tourism hubs to provide tourists with unique nature-based experiences while promoting sustainable tourism activities across the state.
Following the directions of Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan, the Forest Department has started preparing plans to develop these locations on the successful model of Jabarkhet Nature Reserve near Mussoorie, which has emerged as a popular private eco-tourism destination.
The initiative aims to create eco-friendly tourism infrastructure without disturbing the natural environment and provide visitors with opportunities to experience the rich biodiversity of Uttarakhand.
Jabarkhet Model Inspires New Eco-Tourism Initiative
During a recent review meeting on eco-tourism activities in forest areas, Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan highlighted the success of the Jabarkhet model and directed the Forest Department to develop similar destinations in other parts of the state.
Jabarkhet Nature Reserve, developed with private sector participation near Mussoorie, has become a successful example of responsible tourism. Tourists from India and abroad visit the reserve to enjoy peaceful surroundings, forests, and natural landscapes.
Taking inspiration from this model, the government aims to establish similar eco-tourism facilities in selected forest areas across Uttarakhand.

Focus on Sustainable Tourism and Local Employment
Uttarakhand has around 71.05% forest cover, making it ideal for promoting nature-based tourism activities.
The eco-tourism initiative focuses on:
- Protecting natural ecosystems
- Promoting sustainable tourism
- Providing visitors with unique forest experiences
- Creating employment opportunities for local communities
The government also plans to encourage local youth participation through activities such as:
- Homestays
- Tourist guides
- Trekking support services
- Nature-based tourism activities
Forest Department Preparing Action Plans for Selected Sites
The Forest Department has identified eight forest locations for development as eco-tourism hubs. Many of these locations already have forest rest houses nearby, which will support tourism infrastructure development.
Chief Conservator of Forests P.K. Patro said that the department has studied the Jabarkhet model and is preparing detailed action plans for the selected locations.
The proposed eco-tourism activities will include:
- Trekking
- Bird watching
- Nature walks
- Wildlife and biodiversity experiences
These activities will allow tourists to explore Uttarakhand’s natural beauty while ensuring environmental conservation.

- Roshli Khal-Khurait Saur (Narendra Nagar) – Proposed budget: ₹85 lakh
- Neergad-Kunjapuri (Narendra Nagar) – Proposed budget: ₹35 lakh
- Kauriya (New Tehri) – Proposed budget: ₹30 lakh
- Gangotri Pandav Cave (Uttarkashi) – Proposed budget: ₹33 lakh
- Binsar (Almora) – Proposed budget: ₹65 lakh
- Binog (Mussoorie) – Proposed budget: ₹60 lakh
Eco-Tourism Push to Strengthen Uttarakhand’s Tourism Sector
The development of these eco-tourism hubs is expected to further strengthen Uttarakhand’s tourism sector by promoting responsible travel and showcasing the state’s forests, landscapes, and biodiversity.
