Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government is preparing to establish the Uttarakhand Sanskrit Commission to protect, promote, and encourage the modern use of the Sanskrit language in the state.
The proposed commission aims to create a comprehensive framework for the preservation of Sanskrit, strengthening Sanskrit education, promoting research, and exploring the role of the ancient language in modern fields such as technology, administration, and artificial intelligence.
To make the formation of the commission more effective, the state government has invited suggestions from Sanskrit scholars, teachers, researchers, universities, Gurukuls, Sanskrit institutions, and Sanskrit enthusiasts across the country. Interested individuals and organisations can submit their suggestions through email by August 10, 2026.
Uttarakhand Moves Ahead with Formation of Sanskrit Commission
The process for establishing the Sanskrit Commission gained momentum after a high-level meeting held at the Uttarakhand Secretariat on July 15, 2026.
Sanskrit Education Secretary Deepak Kumar said that Uttarakhand had taken an important step in 2010 by granting Sanskrit the status of the second official language of the state.
The move made Uttarakhand one of the first states in India to provide constitutional recognition to Sanskrit as a state language, reflecting its cultural and historical importance.

The Chief Minister stated that Sanskrit holds a special place in the identity of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, which is known for its rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
According to Dhami, Sanskrit is not only a language but also a foundation of India’s knowledge traditions and cultural legacy. The state government is working to connect Sanskrit with more people and give it a modern identity according to changing times.
Key Focus Areas of Proposed Sanskrit Commission
The proposed Uttarakhand Sanskrit Commission will work on several important areas related to Sanskrit development and promotion.
