Dehradun: Uttarakhand has achieved a historic milestone in its tourism sector, welcoming 6,03,21,194 tourists and pilgrims in 2025, including 1,92,533 foreign visitors. This marks the first time since the state’s formation in 2000 that the annual tourist count has surpassed six crore, reflecting the growing appeal of the state as a spiritual and leisure destination.
Haridwar Leads as the Most Visited Destination
Among the state’s destinations, Haridwar emerged as the biggest crowd-puller, hosting an astounding 3.42 crore visitors. The state capital, Dehradun, followed with 67.35 lakh tourists, while Tehri welcomed 53.29 lakh visitors, ranking third.
Tourism and Religious Affairs Minister Satpal Maharaj credited this record-breaking growth to the proactive policies of the state government. “Under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s leadership, tourism in Uttarakhand has gained new momentum through infrastructure upgrades at pilgrimage sites and major development schemes,” he said.
Improved Security and Facilities Drive Growth
The minister emphasized that enhanced security measures and visitor facilities have played a crucial role in attracting tourists. “Breaking a 25-year record demonstrates the success of our upgraded arrangements,” Maharaj noted.
Experts Suggest Actual Numbers Could Be Higher
Some analysts believe that the official figures might underestimate the real tourist volume. Anoop Nautiyal, founder of Social Development for Communities, said, “Considering major events like the Kanwad Yatra in Haridwar, Chardham Yatra, and the Purnagiri fair, the actual number of visitors could exceed 10 crore when including Mussoorie, Nainital, and Corbett.”
Stakeholders Call for Better Tourism Management
Despite the record numbers, tourism experts and hospitality stakeholders are urging better crowd management and infrastructure planning. Arun Verma, President of the Almora Hotel Association, said, “Tourism is concentrated in popular spots like Nainital and Mussoorie. There is a need to promote offbeat destinations such as Kausani and Jageshwar.” He also highlighted traffic bottlenecks near Kanchi Dham, which affect visitor flow and tourism experiences in Almora and surrounding areas.
Boost to Uttarakhand’s Economy
The record tourism influx is expected to significantly benefit the local economy, generate employment opportunities, and reinforce the state’s reputation as a leading spiritual and leisure tourism hub in India.
