West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari is stepping up efforts to attract major investments, with a proposed Ambani meeting, Adani hospital project, defence facility and Haldia expansion in focus.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is stepping up the state’s investment outreach, with a proposed meeting with Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, participation in a BRICS Summit dinner in Delhi and several major industrial projects in the pipeline.

The Chief Minister has also highlighted upcoming projects involving the Adani Group, Haldia Petrochemicals and the defence sector as part of the government’s broader effort to bring large national and international companies to West Bengal.

CM Eyes Ambani Meeting Amid Investment Push

Adhikari said he is likely to attend a dinner being hosted during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday, September 12. India is hosting the summit, which brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, on September 12 and 13.

The Chief Minister is also scheduled to visit Mumbai, where he said he would meet Mukesh Ambani. He indicated that the state government wants greater participation from major corporate groups in West Bengal’s economic development.

Adhikari also mentioned a recent interaction with Anant Ambani, who invited him to the family’s Ganesh Puja celebrations.

The proposed meeting with the Reliance chairman comes as the state government seeks to attract large private investments and expand economic activity across sectors.

Adani Group’s 2,000-Bed Hospital Near Kolkata

Another major project highlighted by the Chief Minister is the Adani Group’s proposed hospital in the New Town area near Kolkata.

Adhikari said he will attend the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the facility on September 24. Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani is also expected to attend the event.

The proposed hospital will have 2,000 beds, according to the details shared by the Chief Minister earlier. Around half of the beds are intended for economically weaker sections.

The project is being positioned as an important healthcare investment in the Kolkata region and could expand access to medical facilities while also creating opportunities linked to healthcare services and employment.

Defence Project Proposed at Junput

The state government is also pursuing a defence-related project at Junput in Purba Medinipur district.

Adhikari said the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had earlier sent a letter to the previous Trinamool Congress government regarding the proposed project but had not received a response.

“We have responded to that letter,” the Chief Minister said, without providing further details about the project.

According to available information, the DRDO has plans for a facility at Junput that could be used for testing the country’s weapon systems.

If the project moves forward, it could add a strategic defence-related activity to West Bengal’s industrial and infrastructure landscape.

₹6,000-Crore Haldia Expansion Ready

Adhikari also announced that the ₹6,000-crore expansion project of Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd has been completed and is ready for inauguration.

The Chief Minister said he would inaugurate the expanded facility before Durga Puja.

Haldia is one of West Bengal’s important industrial centres, and the completion of the expansion is significant for the state’s petrochemical and manufacturing ecosystem.

The project can strengthen industrial activity around Haldia while supporting related businesses and supply chains.

Land to Be Handed Over to 33 Companies

Alongside the major projects, the West Bengal government is preparing to facilitate investments by handing over land to companies planning to establish projects in the state.

Adhikari said land would shortly be handed over to 33 companies for setting up their projects.

The move indicates an effort to convert investment proposals into projects on the ground by addressing one of the key requirements for industrial expansion — access to suitable land.

The government is seeking investments across sectors rather than relying on a single industry or corporate group.

Focus on Jobs, Revenue and Public Services

The investment push is part of the BJP-led state government’s effort to present West Bengal as a destination for national and international businesses.

Adhikari said attracting major companies would help expand the state’s economic activity and increase its revenue base.

According to the Chief Minister, stronger corporate participation can generate additional resources that the government can direct towards sectors such as education, healthcare and infrastructure.

This approach links private investment with broader public development objectives. Large industrial and infrastructure projects can also create direct and indirect employment while supporting local businesses and service providers.

The combination of industrial expansion, healthcare investment, defence-related infrastructure and new corporate projects reflects the government’s attempt to build a wider investment ecosystem in the state.

For West Bengal, the focus now will be on turning proposed investments and land allocations into operational projects. The upcoming Ambani meeting, Adani hospital foundation ceremony, Haldia Petrochemicals expansion and proposed Junput defence facility will therefore remain important developments in the state’s investment and infrastructure agenda.
