Buxar: SJVN Limited is set to achieve a major milestone in its power generation expansion with the commercial operation of Unit-II (660 MW) of its 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar on September 12, 2026.
The commercial operation will be achieved through SJVN’s wholly owned subsidiary, SJVN Thermal Private Limited (STPL). According to the company’s disclosure to the stock exchanges, Unit-II is scheduled to achieve commercial operation at 00:00 hours on September 12, 2026.
SJVN Buxar Thermal Power Project Unit-II to Begin Commercial Operation
The commissioning of the 660 MW second unit marks an important step in SJVN’s efforts to expand its thermal power generation portfolio and strengthen India’s energy infrastructure.
The Buxar Thermal Power Project has a total installed capacity of 1,320 MW, comprising two units of 660 MW each.
With Unit-II entering commercial operation, the project will further contribute to electricity generation and improve power availability in Bihar and the wider Eastern Region.

Buxar Thermal Power Project Uses Supercritical Technology
The Buxar Thermal Power Project is being developed at Chausa in Buxar district, Bihar, using advanced supercritical technology.
The technology is designed to provide higher operational efficiency compared with conventional subcritical thermal power generation while helping reduce the environmental footprint of the project.

Project to Generate 9,828.72 Million Units Annually
Once fully operational, the 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project is projected to generate around 9,828.72 Million Units of electricity annually.
The project is expected to play an important role in meeting growing electricity demand and strengthening the reliability of power supply in Bihar and the Eastern Region.
The use of supercritical technology is also aimed at improving the overall efficiency of the power generation facility.
85% Power Allocated to Bihar
A significant portion of the electricity generated by the Buxar project has been allocated to Bihar.
Under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), 85% of the project’s power has been allocated to Bihar.
The allocation is expected to:
- Improve power availability across Bihar.
- Support the state’s growing electricity demand.
- Help reduce peak-hour power shortages.
- Strengthen energy security in Bihar.
- Contribute to improved power availability in the Eastern Region.
The project is therefore expected to have a significant role in supporting the state’s power requirements once both units are fully operational.
Buxar Project Strengthens SJVN’s Power Generation Portfolio
The commercial operation of Unit-II represents another major step in SJVN’s expansion of its power generation capacity.
The company is developing the project through its wholly owned subsidiary, SJVN Thermal Private Limited. With its strategic location and large generation capacity, the Buxar project is expected to contribute significantly to India’s power infrastructure.
The commissioning also strengthens SJVN’s presence in thermal power generation alongside its established portfolio in hydropower and other renewable energy projects.
