Leadership Continuity: SJVN Extends Additional CMD Charge to Bhupender Gupta for 6 Months 

Ministry of Power extends Bhupender Gupta’s additional charge as SJVN CMD from August 1, 2026, or until a regular incumbent takes charge, whichever is earlier.

Shimla: SJVN Limited has informed the stock exchanges that the Ministry of Power has extended the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN to Bhupender Gupta, CMD of NHPC Limited, for a further period of six months with effect from August 1, 2026. The extension will continue until the regular incumbent assumes charge, further orders are issued, or the six-month period ends, whichever is earliest.

Bhupender Gupta Gets Extension as SJVN CMD

According to the Ministry of Power order dated September 10, 2026, Bhupender Gupta will continue to hold the additional charge of CMD, SJVN, while serving as CMD of NHPC Limited.

Gupta has been holding the additional charge of SJVN CMD since May 1, 2025. He took charge as CMD of NHPC Limited on September 4, 2025.

The latest extension has been granted for:

  • Period: Six months
  • Effective from: August 1, 2026
  • End condition: Until the regular incumbent assumes charge, further orders are issued, or the six-month period ends, whichever is earliest.

Bhupender Gupta’s Professional Experience

Bhupender Gupta is an electrical engineering graduate and holds an MBA in Operations Management. He has more than 34 years of professional experience, including over 31 years in Central Public Sector Undertakings in the power sector.

He began his professional career with ACC Limited in 1991 and joined SJVN in 1995. During his tenure with SJVN, he was involved in planning, erection, commissioning, and operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment at the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Power Plant.

He was also deputed to Bhutan from 2002 to 2005 for the 1,020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Power Project.

Experience Across Power Sector Organisations

Gupta subsequently joined REC Limited in March 2007, where he was associated with project financing for hydro and thermal power projects.

He later served as Additional CEO and operational head at REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd., overseeing execution and project management of power sector projects across India.

In December 2020, he joined the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan as Director (Technical) on deputation. He subsequently became Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited in June 2023.

Leadership in Major Power Projects

During his tenure at THDCIL, Gupta played a leadership role in the commissioning of major power projects, including:

  • 660 MW Unit-1 of the Khurja Super Thermal Power Project
  • 250 MW Unit-1 of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant
  • 250 MW Unit-2 of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant

His professional experience covers multiple segments of the power sector, including hydropower, thermal power, renewable energy, transmission and distribution.

His areas of expertise include:

  • Project planning and design
  • Project execution
  • Contract management
  • Project management
  • Operations and maintenance
  • Power sector financing
  • Transmission and distribution projects

Focus on Non-Fossil Energy and Emerging Technologies

As part of his vision for the power sector, Gupta has emphasised meeting India’s growing electricity demand through non-fossil fuel-based energy resources while strengthening the country’s energy security.

His areas of focus include emerging technologies and new-age energy solutions such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • EV-grid integration
  • Cybersecurity and digital protection
  • Green hydrogen
  • Bioenergy
  • Energy storage

His experience across conventional and renewable power projects is expected to support his continued responsibilities at SJVN and NHPC.
