Colambo: India and Sri Lanka have signed an agreement to upgrade the L70 air defence gun system used by the Sri Lankan military. The project will be carried out by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a leading Indian defence public sector company.

The agreement was signed during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Colombo and is being seen as an important step in strengthening defence ties between the two neighbours.

The L70 Gun System Upgrade is expected to improve Sri Lanka’s air defence capabilities through modern electronics, advanced fire-control systems, and improved targeting technology. The deal also highlights India’s growing role as a defence technology partner in the Indian Ocean region.

Details of India Sri Lanka L70 Gun System Upgrade Deal

The agreement was finalized during Rajnath Singh’s three-day visit to Sri Lanka. During the visit, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defence cooperation in areas such as military training, defence education, technology sharing, and equipment modernization.

India and Sri Lanka have steadily increased defence engagement in recent years. The latest agreement reflects a shared interest in maintaining regional security and strengthening military preparedness.

What Is The L70 Gun System

The L70 is a 40mm air defence gun originally designed to engage low-flying aircraft and aerial threats. Over the years, several countries have modernized the platform by integrating advanced electronics, radar support, and digital fire-control systems.

India has already upgraded similar L70 systems for its own armed forces, giving BEL significant experience in modernizing the legacy weapon platform.

Key Features Of L70 Gun System Upgrade Plan

The modernization package includes replacing older hydraulic systems with electric drives. This change improves responsiveness, reliability, and operational efficiency.

The upgraded system will also feature an Integrated Fire Control System equipped with advanced sensors, including:

  • Daylight television sight
  • Thermal imaging system
  • Eye-safe laser range finder
  • Digital fire-control electronics

These technologies will help operators detect and engage targets during both day and night operations.

Advanced Ballistic Computation

Another important improvement is the addition of autonomous ballistic computation capabilities. The upgraded system can automatically calculate firing solutions by considering factors such as:

  • Muzzle velocity corrections
  • Weapon alignment
  • Tilt compensation
  • Ammunition characteristics

This helps improve firing accuracy and reduces the workload on operators.

India Sri Lanka L70 Gun System Upgrade Deal: BEL’s Important Role In The Upgrade

Bharat Electronics Limited is expected to play a central role in the project because the upgrade is highly electronics-intensive. BEL’s expertise includes:

  • Sensors and surveillance systems
  • Fire-control technology
  • Defence electronics
  • Radar integration
  • System engineering

The company has successfully delivered several air defence and radar programs for the Indian armed forces and continues to be one of India’s largest defence electronics manufacturers.

Integration With Radar Networks

The upgraded L70 system will be capable of working with tracking and fire-control radars. This integration allows the gun to operate as part of a broader air defence network instead of functioning as a standalone weapon.Radar-supported targeting improves target acquisition, tracking, and engagement capabilities, making the system more effective against modern aerial threats.

Strategic Importance of India Sri Lanka L70 Gun System Upgrade Deal For India And Sri Lanka

The agreement goes beyond equipment modernization. It demonstrates the growing strategic partnership between New Delhi and Colombo. During his visit, Rajnath Singh met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and emphasized the strong civilizational, maritime, and strategic ties shared by the two countries.

The L70 upgrade project also supports India’s broader goal of expanding defence exports and strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

Export Opportunities For Indian Defence Industry

The Sri Lanka project could create additional export opportunities for Indian defence companies. Modernization of legacy military systems remains a growing market globally because many countries seek cost-effective upgrades rather than purchasing entirely new platforms.

BEL’s successful execution of the L70 upgrade could open doors for future overseas contracts involving fire-control systems, radar integration, defence electronics, and platform modernization.
