New Delhi: The BEML indigenous 1350 HP engine project is emerging as a major step in India’s defence modernization drive. Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), in coordination with the Ministry of Defence and other defence agencies, is working on a powerful indigenous engine and powerpack for the Indian Army’s T-90 Bhishma tanks. The project aims to replace the existing 1,000 HP engine and significantly improve the tank’s mobility, especially in challenging terrains such as Ladakh and other high-altitude regions.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of defence self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat programme and aims to reduce dependence on foreign military technologies.

What Is The BEML Indigenous 1350 HP Engine Project

BEML is developing a new 1,350-horsepower engine and complete powerpack for India’s T-90 main battle tanks. The new system is designed to provide greater power, improved acceleration, better climbing ability, and enhanced battlefield mobility compared to the current 1,000 HP engine.

According to defence reports, the project has received support under the Ministry of Defence’s MAKE-I framework for indigenous defence development.

Why Does The Indian Army Need A BEML Indigenous 1350 HP Engine

The Indian Army operates a large fleet of T-90 Bhishma tanks, many of which are deployed in difficult environments including deserts and mountainous regions.

At high altitudes, thinner air reduces engine performance. Defence planners have identified the need for a more powerful engine to ensure that tanks maintain speed, manoeuvrability, and combat readiness even in harsh terrain.

Ministry Of Defence Backing The BEML Indigenous 1350 HP Engine Programme

The Ministry of Defence has approved funding support for indigenous development of advanced military technologies.

Under the MAKE-I framework, the government can fund a significant portion of prototype development costs while ensuring high levels of indigenous content in the final product. This approach encourages Indian companies to develop critical defence technologies domestically.

Key Features Expected In The New Powerpack

The proposed 1,350 HP powerpack is expected to include several improvements over the current system. These may include advanced cooling mechanisms, improved thermal management, better gearbox integration, and enhanced fuel efficiency. Such upgrades can increase operational reliability in extreme weather conditions.

How Will The Upgrade Improve T-90 Tank Performance

A higher-powered engine can dramatically improve a tank’s battlefield effectiveness. The new engine is expected to provide faster acceleration, better obstacle-crossing capability, improved climbing performance, and greater agility during combat operations. These advantages are particularly important in mountainous sectors where mobility often determines operational success.

Benefits For High-Altitude Operations

Regions such as Ladakh present unique challenges for armoured vehicles. Reduced oxygen levels affect engine output and vehicle performance. A more powerful indigenous engine can compensate for these effects, helping tanks maintain combat effectiveness at high elevations.

BEML Indigenous 1350 HP Engine: Strengthening India’s Defence Self-Reliance

The project represents more than just an engine upgrade. It is part of a broader effort to build indigenous expertise in propulsion systems, thermal management, transmission technology, and armoured vehicle engineering. Such capabilities are considered essential for reducing long-term dependence on foreign suppliers.

Boost For Indian Defence Manufacturing

The development programme is expected to involve multiple Indian industries, MSMEs, research institutions, and defence manufacturing partners. This could create a stronger domestic supply chain while generating technological expertise that may support future military platforms.

How Does It Compare With Existing Tank Engines

The current T-90 Bhishma tanks use a 1,000 HP engine. A jump to 1,350 HP would provide a substantial increase in power output and could improve the tank’s power-to-weight ratio. This enhancement would translate into better mobility across deserts, mountains, riverine areas, and other challenging terrains.

Link To Future Indian Tank Programmes

India is also pursuing indigenous tank technologies for future armoured platforms. Experience gained from developing high-power tank engines and powerpacks could support future projects, including next-generation armoured fighting vehicles and indigenous battle tanks.
