Indian Masterminds Stories

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Government’s Old Age Pension Scheme has emerged as a major social security lifeline for elderly women across the state, with more than 29.23 lakh beneficiaries receiving regular financial assistance under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Among all districts, Jaunpur, Azamgarh and Ballia have emerged as the top-performing districts in extending pension benefits to elderly women. The outstanding implementation of the scheme in these districts reflects the proactive efforts of three IAS officers—Dr Dinesh Chandra Singh, Ravindra Kumar II and Mangla Prasad Singh.

Old Age Pension Scheme: A Lifeline for Elderly Women

The Uttar Pradesh Government is currently providing old age pension benefits to 29,23,364 elderly women across the state.

Under the scheme:

  • Beneficiaries receive ₹1,000 per month
  • ₹3,000 is credited every quarter through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
  • Funds are deposited directly into bank accounts
  • Payments are made regularly and transparently

For economically vulnerable and destitute women, the pension serves as a critical source of financial support, helping them meet daily needs while restoring dignity, self-respect and independence.

Jaunpur Ranks First in the State

Former Jaunpur District Magistrate Dr Dinesh Chandra Singh, a 2012-batch promotee IAS officer, led the most successful implementation of the scheme in the state.

During his tenure, 1,00,820 elderly women in Jaunpur were brought under the pension scheme, the highest number recorded in Uttar Pradesh.

His efforts ensured that thousands of elderly women gained access to timely and regular pension payments.

Azamgarh Secures Second Position

Azamgarh District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar II, a 2011-batch IAS officer, secured the second position in the state.

Under his leadership, 86,166 elderly women were enrolled and benefited from the Old Age Pension Scheme.

The district’s strong performance highlights efficient beneficiary identification and effective delivery mechanisms.

Ballia Takes Third Spot

Ballia District Magistrate Mangla Prasad Singh, a 2012-batch IAS officer, secured third place by extending pension benefits to 79,160 elderly women.

The district’s achievement is being seen as a major administrative success in reaching elderly women from economically weaker sections.

Top Three Districts in Old Age Pension Coverage

  • Jaunpur – Dr Dinesh Chandra Singh – 1,00,820 beneficiaries
  • Azamgarh – Ravindra Kumar II – 86,166 beneficiaries
  • Ballia – Mangla Prasad Singh – 79,160 beneficiaries

DBT Ensures Transparency and Timely Assistance

The use of Direct Benefit Transfer has played a crucial role in the success of the scheme by eliminating intermediaries and ensuring that pension amounts reach beneficiaries directly.

For many elderly women, the quarterly payment has become a dependable source of income, enabling them to purchase medicines, food and essential household items.

Social Security with Dignity

Officials say the scheme is not merely a financial assistance programme but an instrument of empowerment that provides elderly women with greater economic independence and confidence.

The exemplary work of district administrations in Jaunpur, Azamgarh and Ballia demonstrates how effective implementation can significantly improve the lives of vulnerable citizens.
