New Delhi: On International Yoga Day 2026, the Indian Armed Forces celebrated yoga in some of the world’s toughest locations, from the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier to underwater submarine training facilities. The Indian Army and Indian Navy used yoga to promote physical fitness, mental strength, and operational readiness among soldiers and sailors.

The celebrations highlighted how yoga has become an important part of military life, helping personnel stay calm, focused, and healthy in extreme environments.

International Yoga Day 2026: Indian Army Performs Yoga in Extreme Conditions

The Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force organized yoga sessions across the country and at sea to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also participated in a large yoga session with around 1,000 soldiers in Shillong.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “Yoga for Healthy Ageing“, emphasizing the role of yoga in improving health, flexibility, and mental well-being throughout life.

Indian Army personnel practiced yoga in some of India’s most challenging locations, including:

  • Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield
  • High-altitude regions of Ladakh
  • Remote posts in Arunachal Pradesh
  • Forward military bases across the country

At these locations, soldiers face:

Yoga and breathing exercises help soldiers improve lung capacity, maintain focus, reduce stress, and adapt to difficult conditions.

International Yoga Day 2026: Indian Navy Conducts Unique Underwater Yoga Session

One of the most remarkable events took place at INS Satvahana, where Indian Navy submariners performed a special underwater yoga session.

According to the Indian Navy, the exercise showcased the connection between physical fitness, mental discipline, and operational preparedness. Around 40 submariners participated in the unique event.

Why Underwater Yoga

Submarine operations require:

  • Excellent breath control
  • Mental concentration
  • Emotional stability
  • Strong physical endurance

Yoga helps sailors develop these qualities, making it a useful training tool alongside conventional military exercises.

International Yoga Day: A Global Movement

The International Day of Yoga is observed every year on June 21 following a United Nations resolution adopted in 2014. Since then, yoga has become a global wellness movement practiced by millions of people across different countries. India continues to promote yoga as a holistic system for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
