New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) successfully conducted the Preliminary phase of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2025 on Sunday, May 25. The two-session examination began with General Studies (Paper 1) from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, followed by the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT – Paper 2) from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM.

A significant number of aspirants appeared for this highly competitive examination, which is widely regarded as one of the toughest exams in the world. The UPSC CSE is the gateway to prestigious roles such as Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.

General Studies (Paper 1) Analysis: Moderate to Difficult Level
Early reactions from candidates and experts indicate that Paper 1 was moderate to difficult in terms of difficulty. The paper tested both depth and breadth of knowledge, with time management posing a major challenge due to the lengthy nature of several questions.

Topic-wise Breakdown:

Ancient History and Polity: Relatively straightforward and scoring, favorable for candidates with strong conceptual clarity.

Modern History: Familiar themes but complex questions requiring analytical thinking.

Geography: Static portions were manageable; however, map-based questions were notably difficult.

Environment: Lengthy and concept-heavy, demanding both attention and patience.

Science and Technology: Toughest section, focusing on obscure topics that are often overlooked in regular preparation.

Current Affairs: Fewer direct questions; however, their influence was seen in contextual framing throughout the paper.

Candidates noted a shift this year toward more questions from static sections such as Polity and Environment, with slightly less emphasis on current affairs.

CSAT (Paper 2): The Qualifying Decider
Paper 2, the CSAT, began after a three-hour break and was conducted from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. This paper, which is qualifying in nature, requires candidates to secure a minimum of 33% marks. Despite its qualifying status, CSAT has proven to be a stumbling block for many in recent years, making it a crucial filter in the selection process.

Next Steps and Vacancies
The official answer key and detailed paper analysis are expected to be published soon on the UPSC’s official website: upsc.gov.in. Candidates will be eagerly awaiting the results of the Prelims to determine their eligibility for the Mains examination, the second stage of the selection process.

This year, UPSC has announced 979 vacancies across elite services including IAS, IFS, IPS, Indian Postal Service (Group A), and Indian Railway Protection Force Service (Group A). In comparison, 1,129 vacancies were filled in 2024, including 180 posts in IAS, 55 in IFS, and 147 in IPS.

As lakhs of aspirants now turn their focus to the Mains stage, the road to India’s top civil services remains as demanding and prestigious as ever.
