Regular Village ‘Chaupals’ Taking Ghurpur Police Closer to the Public

The Ghurpur police station in the vicinity of the Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh has begun a community policing initiative to bridge the gap between police and people living in rural areas. Through village ‘chaupals’, they listen to the grievances of the rural people and try to sort them out as soon as possible. Their other initiative ‘Mission Rakhwale’ sorts out grievances of defense personnel’s families.

For the administration to function smoothly in any jurisdiction, it is extremely important to bridge the gap between the police and the public. Only when the people trust their police, will they reach out to them and the police would be able to help them on time.

To build bridges between the police and the people, the Ghurpur police station in the trans-Yamuna pocket of Prayagraj district, under the leadership of trainee IPS officer Chirag Jain, came up with a unique policing initiative.

VILLAGE CHAUPALS

In a one-of-its-kind initiative by the Ghurpur police, the men in khaki will be holding ‘chaupals’ in villages within the jurisdiction of the police station in the trans-Yamuna pocket. This will help them in interacting with the villagers on a personal level and sort out the problems that they are facing in their daily lives.

This is the first time that the Ghurpur police are holding such chaupals. This is being done under the umbrella of Mission Community Policing which is designed to bridge the information gap between police and the general population by especially ensuring that cops are available at the rural residents’ doorsteps at all times.

INVOLVEMENT OF BEAT CONSTABLES

The initiative was the brainchild of a trainee IPS officer, Mr. Chirag Jain, who is currently posted as the Station House Officer (SHO) at Ghurpur.

The idea was to launch the unique initiative of ‘Police Aap Ke Dwar’ (Police at your door) in the villages coming under the jurisdiction of Ghurpur police station only. Under the campaign, the beat constables of all villages first interact with the concerned gram pradhan and then chalk out a plan to hold a chaupal in a particular village on a particular day.

“Once we hold chaupal in a particular village, police officials interact with gram pradhan and other villagers and take steps to solve their problems or grievances. Officials listen to the problems of villagers patiently, discuss with officials concerned and first make efforts to sort out issues on the spot. If not, then cops assure that the issue will be solved within the span of the next 15 days,” Mr. Jain said in an interview with the media.

CLOSELY MONITORING CRIMINALS

According to the trainee officer, the actual motto of this initiative of holding chaupals in the villages is to keep a close eye on and monitor the crimes happening in and around the villages and the criminals involved in them, alongside ensuring the speedy disposal of the grievances of people.

Further, Mr. Jain said that every beat constable has been asked to review FIRs and NCRs registered under different sections of IPC from the particular village, monitoring land disputes, HS (history-sheeter) list, and jail release, Goonda\Gangster Act, wanted criminals, NBWs, and section 82\83.

MISSION RAKHWALE

Another important feather in the cap of Ghurpur police station is the launch of their campaign that goes by the name of ‘Mission Rakhwale’. Under this mission, the grievances and problems of families of defence personnel, CRPF, CISF, and other central forces, who are posted across the country and their families who reside within the limits of Ghurpur police station, will be heard promptly.

The initiative will ensure the well-being of their families so that defence personnel could perform their duties without any tension of family issues at their duty points.
