New Delhi: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has appointed Dr. Jagannath Nayak, DS & DG (MSS), DRDO, as a Part-Time Official Director (Government Director) on its Board.
The appointment was approved by the Ministry of Defence, Department of Defence Production, through an Office Memorandum dated October 6, 2026. BDL received the official intimation on October 7, 2026.
Dr. Nayak’s appointment will become effective from the date of his appointment. His appointment is currently under process.
Dr Jagannath Nayak Appointed Government Director on BDL Board
The appointment has been made pursuant to Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
Dr. Jagannath Nayak currently serves as Distinguished Scientist & Director General (MSS) at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). His appointment brings extensive experience in defence research, advanced avionics and indigenous technology development to the BDL Board.

Dr Jagannath Nayak Has Over 35 Years of Defence R&D Experience
Dr. Nayak has more than 35 years of experience in defence research and development and has contributed to the indigenous design and development of advanced avionics and strategic technologies for defence and aerospace applications.
During his tenure as Director of the Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), he led the development, field testing and technology transfer of India’s first Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system.
He has also been associated with the development of critical technologies for India’s defence systems, including:
- Fibre Optic Gyro guidance for Akash missiles
- DEW-based anti-drone systems
- Indigenous Fibre Optic Gyroscopes
- Inertial navigation technologies
- Laser and photonics-based defence technologies
Key Role in Indigenous Fibre Optic Gyroscope Technology
As Project Director at Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, Dr. Nayak led the indigenous development of Fibre Optic Gyroscopes, a critical technology used in navigation and guidance systems.
The technology has applications across defence platforms, including missiles, aircraft and main battle tanks, supporting India’s efforts towards greater self-reliance in strategic technologies.
His work has contributed to reducing dependence on imported technologies in key areas of defence and aerospace engineering.
Dr Nayak’s Academic and Professional Background
Dr. Jagannath Nayak holds an MS and PhD in Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
His academic and professional contributions include:
- Founder Chairperson of the IEEE Photonics Society, Hyderabad Chapter
- Distinguished Visiting Professor at IISc Bengaluru and IIT Madras from 2009 to 2014
- Author of multiple books covering defence technology and advanced engineering
- Published more than 125 research papers
- Specialisation in Directed Energy Weapons, Inertial Navigation Systems, Lasers and Fibre Optics
His combination of defence R&D experience and academic expertise is expected to add significant value to BDL’s strategic technology initiatives.
BDL Board Set to Gain Defence Technology Expertise
Dr. Nayak’s appointment is expected to strengthen BDL’s Board with specialised expertise in indigenous defence technologies, advanced research and strategic systems.
His experience in areas such as directed energy weapons, navigation systems, photonics and defence avionics could support BDL’s efforts to expand its technology capabilities and contribute to India’s defence self-reliance.
The appointment also comes as Indian defence companies continue to focus on indigenous design, development and manufacturing of advanced defence systems.
