Bengaluru: In a landmark initiative poised to transform India’s maritime equipment manufacturing landscape, BEML Limited, a premier Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sagarmala Finance Corporation Limited (SMFCL). The agreement was formalised at BEML’s Bengaluru headquarters in the presence of Shantanu Roy, CMD of BEML, LVS Sudhakar Babu, MD of SMFCL, and senior officials from both organisations.
Strategic Collaboration for Maritime Growth
Under this collaboration, SMFCL will provide financing support to BEML through its Maritime Development Fund and other Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) instruments. This funding will enable the accelerated development of domestically manufactured marine equipment and auxiliaries for shipbuilding, ports, and related maritime infrastructure. Recognising the capital-intensive and globally competitive nature of the maritime sector, the partnership includes a planned investment of ₹10,000 crore to establish both brownfield and greenfield manufacturing facilities across India.

Boosting Indigenous Capabilities
The strategic alliance aims to develop world-class indigenous capabilities, reduce import dependence, and drive the modernisation of India’s maritime infrastructure—a critical national priority amid ongoing sectoral transformation. By facilitating financial pathways for advanced maritime technologies, including port cranes, cargo-handling systems, marine engines, propulsion aggregates, power systems, shipping containers, and other high-technology components, the partnership supports India’s long-term goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the maritime domain.
Aligning with Maritime Vision 2047
Aligned with India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, this initiative is expected to strengthen the country’s position as a global maritime power. BEML’s Maritime Strategic Business Unit continues to advance India’s maritime ambitions with a comprehensive portfolio of indigenous solutions covering shipbuilding support systems, port modernisation, dredging, cargo and material handling, and specialised marine engineering. With a nationwide manufacturing footprint and decades of engineering expertise, BEML remains committed to operational excellence, innovation, and self-reliant capabilities.
