GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will lead a high-level delegation to the United States and Canada to promote the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2027, marking a significant overseas investment outreach by the state government.
According to government sources, Patel’s delegation will visit the two countries between August 16 and 26, while government spokesperson and senior minister Jitu Vaghani announced the overseas visit during the weekly media briefing following the State Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister.
The visit is expected to focus on attracting global investors, technology companies and industry leaders to Gujarat ahead of the next edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.
First Sitting Gujarat CM to Visit US Since 1995
The proposed visit has historical significance as Bhupendra Patel is set to become the first sitting Gujarat Chief Minister in more than 25 years to undertake an official visit to the United States.
Government sources said the last Gujarat Chief Minister to officially visit the US was Keshubhai Patel, who travelled there in 1995.

Since then, sitting Gujarat Chief Ministers have undertaken overseas visits to several other countries, but an official US visit by a state Chief Minister did not take place.
Why Gujarat CM’s US Visit Is Significant
The visit comes at a time when Gujarat is seeking to strengthen its position as a preferred destination for global investment and emerging industries.
During the proposed tour, Patel is expected to participate in presentations and hold one-to-one meetings with business leaders and investors.
Particular attention is expected to be given to new-age and technology-intensive sectors such as:
- Semiconductors
- Fintech
- Advanced manufacturing
- Technology and innovation
- Other emerging industries
The delegation will seek to showcase Gujarat’s industrial ecosystem, investment opportunities and infrastructure to potential investors.
Push for Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027
The primary objective of the visit is to promote the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027 and encourage global companies to participate in the event.
The summit has emerged as a major platform for Gujarat to showcase its investment opportunities and attract domestic as well as international businesses.
Vaghani said the Chief Minister’s visit would focus on inviting global businessmen, investors and technology leadersto the summit and attracting maximum investment into Gujarat.
The US and Canada tour will be the first overseas outreach programme for the forthcoming edition of VGGS.
Who Will Accompany Bhupendra Patel?
A high-level delegation comprising senior state government officials and industry representatives is expected to accompany the Chief Minister.
According to government sources, the delegation will include:
- Manoj Das, Chief Secretary, Gujarat
- T. Natarajan, Additional Chief Secretary, Finance
- Sanjeev Kumar, Principal Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office
- Representatives from the state’s industry sector
- Other senior officials from the state administration
The delegation is expected to engage with businesses and investors across multiple sectors during the tour.
Meetings With Technology and Industry Leaders
The Gujarat government has reportedly lined up presentations and individual meetings with leading business figures during the visit.
The focus will be on attracting investments from companies working in areas that are considered important for Gujarat’s next phase of industrial development.
Semiconductors and fintech are among the sectors expected to receive particular attention as Gujarat seeks to expand beyond its traditional industrial strengths.
The government is also expected to highlight the state’s infrastructure, connectivity, manufacturing capabilities and investment ecosystem.
More Global Outreach Missions Planned
The US and Canada visit is expected to be followed by a series of international outreach programmes ahead of VGGS 2027.
Government sources said delegations comprising ministers, senior officials and business representatives are likely to travel over the next one to two months to different parts of the world.
The planned outreach will cover regions including Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Japan and South Korea, among other countries.
The objective will be to build international interest in the upcoming summit and attract potential investments into Gujarat.
Gujarat’s Previous CM Visits Abroad
Gujarat’s Chief Ministers have undertaken several international visits over the years, although the US has been absent from the list of official destinations for a sitting CM for decades.
In 2005, then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was denied a US visa. Modi later became Prime Minister of India.
His successor Anandiben Patel, who is currently the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, made her first foreign visit as Gujarat Chief Minister to China in 2015.
In 2019, the late Vijay Rupani, who was then serving as Gujarat Chief Minister, visited Russia during his second term.
Bhupendra Patel himself has previously undertaken overseas visits to promote Gujarat’s investment opportunities, including visits to the UAE in 2021 and Japan in 2023.
Investment Outreach Amid Global Economic Challenges
The proposed visit comes against the backdrop of challenges facing some important sectors of Gujarat’s economy.
The diamond manufacturing industry in Surat, for instance, has faced pressure following sanctions imposed on Russia after the Ukraine war and higher US tariffs on countries purchasing Russian crude.
These developments have affected Indian businesses with international exposure.
Against this backdrop, the Gujarat government’s investment outreach to North America is also expected to focus on diversifying investment opportunities and strengthening international business partnerships.
Patel’s First Major Overseas Outreach for VGGS 2027
The US-Canada tour will be an important component of Gujarat’s preparations for the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027.
By taking a senior government and industry delegation directly to major international investment hubs, the state is seeking to position Gujarat as a destination for investments in both established industries and emerging technologies.
