AHMEDABAD: In a major push towards environmental conservation and a greener Gujarat, a mass plantation programme was organised at Ambaji in the Aravalli ranges on August 14, 2026.

The initiative was aimed at strengthening green cover, protecting the local ecosystem and promoting biodiversity around the holy shrine of Ambaji, where the temple town is surrounded by the natural landscape of the Aravalli hills.

The plantation programme was organised under the Gujarat Government’s statewide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0’ tree plantation campaign for 2026.

50,000 Saplings to Cover 20 Hectares

As part of the Green Ambaji Plantation Project, around 50,000 saplings are being planted across approximately 20 hectares of land.

The saplings selected for the drive are suited to the local ecosystem, with the initiative focusing not merely on increasing the number of trees but also on strengthening the ecological resilience of the region.

The plantation is expected to contribute to improving green cover and supporting biodiversity in the Ambaji-Aravalli landscape.

Green Ambaji Plantation Project

The Gujarat State Forest Department has launched the Green Ambaji Plantation Project with the objective of making the area surrounding Ambaji greener, richer in biodiversity and more environmentally resilient.

The mass plantation programme is intended to provide fresh momentum to the project through active public participation.

The initiative seeks to transform tree plantation from a government-led activity into a broader community movement focused on long-term environmental protection.

Tribal Communities and Local Residents Join Hands

The programme places significant emphasis on the participation of local communities.

Members of Joint Forest Management Committees, villagers, nature enthusiasts and tribal communities are participating in the plantation initiative.

The involvement of tribal communities is particularly significant because communities living in and around forest landscapes have traditionally played an important role in protecting and managing natural resources.

By involving local residents and forest-dependent communities, the initiative aims to build a stronger sense of ownership towards the newly planted trees and the surrounding ecosystem.

‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0’ Campaign

The Ambaji plantation programme forms part of Gujarat’s statewide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0’ campaign.

The campaign seeks to encourage people to participate directly in tree plantation and environmental conservation.

By linking the plantation initiative with Ambaji, a major religious and cultural destination, the programme also seeks to connect environmental protection with public participation and community responsibility.

Focus on Biodiversity and Environmental Protection

The Ambaji region, located in the Aravalli ranges, has considerable ecological significance.

Planting species suited to the local environment can help strengthen the area’s green cover while supporting biodiversity and improving the resilience of the landscape.

The plantation drive is therefore being positioned as more than a one-day tree-planting activity. Its broader objective is to contribute to the long-term ecological health of the region.

A Green Pledge for Future Generations

The initiative carries a message of environmental responsibility for future generations.

The programme’s underlying message is that every sapling planted today can contribute to a healthier and greener environment tomorrow.

With 50,000 saplings planned across nearly 20 hectares, the Green Ambaji Plantation Project represents a significant plantation effort in the Aravalli landscape and reinforces Gujarat’s focus on community participation in environmental conservation.

The initiative seeks to create a greener Ambaji while strengthening the connection between nature, biodiversity and community participation.
