Bihar will develop 207 rural haats with modern facilities, giving JEEViKA Didis, farmers and SHGs better access to markets and new livelihood opportunities.

Patna: Bihar is set to develop 207 rural haats across the state to provide better market access to JEEViKA Didis, farmers, women-led self-help groups and local producers. The initiative will equip selected markets with basic modern facilities and create a more organised platform for selling rural products.

The Rural Development Department will develop these haats under the Viksit Bharat–G RAM G scheme, with a focus on strengthening rural livelihoods and improving opportunities for local producers.

207 Rural Haat Sites Selected

The department had sought details of potential rural haat locations from districts at the block, subdivision and district levels. A total of 725 potential sites were identified across Bihar.

After detailed scrutiny, 207 locations were found suitable for immediate implementation in the first phase. The department has now issued orders for their development according to an approved standard model.

Rural haats covering more than 20 decimals of land have been given priority under the initiative.

Modern Facilities for Sellers and Buyers

The selected haats will receive infrastructure aimed at making local markets more convenient for both vendors and customers.

Each rural haat will include:

  • Sheltered vendor platforms
  • Paver-block flooring
  • Supporting structures and basic facilities

Officials have also been directed to complete the required administrative and documentation formalities within the stipulated timeframe so construction can begin.

Better Market Access for Farmers and JEEViKA Didis

The new rural haats are expected to give farmers and women associated with self-help groups a more direct route to consumers.

Agricultural produce, handicrafts and other locally made products can be sold through these organised markets. Better access to local buyers could reduce dependence on intermediaries and help producers receive a larger share of the value generated from their products.

For JEEViKA Didis, the initiative could provide an additional platform to expand sales of products made by women-led groups.

Boost to Rural Livelihoods

The government’s focus goes beyond creating market infrastructure. By connecting producers with local consumers, the initiative aims to strengthen village-level economic activity.

Improved market access can encourage farmers and SHGs to increase production while creating opportunities for small and medium rural entrepreneurs. It could also support employment and self-employment linked to trading, transport and other market-related activities.

Focus on Women’s Economic Participation

Women’s self-help groups are expected to be among the major beneficiaries of the initiative. A dedicated and organised marketplace can help women entrepreneurs showcase and sell their products closer to their communities.

This could strengthen women’s participation in local economic activity while giving JEEViKA members greater opportunities to build sustainable income sources.

Strengthening Bihar’s Rural Economy

The development of 207 modern rural haats is aimed at creating a stronger connection between rural production and local markets. By improving infrastructure and reducing barriers to selling products, the initiative could help farmers, women’s groups and local entrepreneurs capture greater value from their economic activities.

The initiative also supports a broader rural development approach in which infrastructure, livelihoods, women’s empowerment and local commerce work together to strengthen Bihar’s village economy.
